The Chiefs defense just got significantly better adding Berry and Fuller into the mix. Cut Hali and Johnson and there's cap room to go after other FA's. The Chiefs D might go from really bad to pretty solid really fast.

At his performance it doesn't matter. Scarcity is much more important than context like quality. If you're available and have recent performance, someone will overpay for your services. This trade is an excellent example of it. It doesn't matter that it's Alex Smith in his 30's.
And someone did.

I was yesterday laughing at people for wanting to trade for Talib due to his age. Guess I was right for more reasons than one.

The hell.

I spend all day waiting for something interesting to happen and then I get this right when I'm going to bed.

Looks good. Chiefs might take a step backwards next year but so might Alex Smith.

over paying for a QB is one thing. Handcuffing yourself to the over pay for years to come is the  part.

The fact that KC got a 3rd rounder & a starter for Alex, means there was more than a few bidders. I would say the Cardinals are in the market for Cousins, but I have a hard time seeing Keim spending $25+ mil for him. Unless Cousins is willing to play for closer to the aav of $20 mil, I don't see too many teams in the bidding for him. Someone will pay him though.

I am not sure what the Redskins where thinking here. Smith is a solid QB, but Cousins is younger with a higher ceiling. The bridge must have been burnt if Cousins wouldn't except the amount of money Alex got or Washington is just dysfunctional if they weren't making at least the same offer to Cousins.

The main concern on the Chiefs' end is if the commissioner will accuse the Skins of collusion and cancel the trade. That is the only thing they have to be worried about.

Chiefs cut Johnson, Revis, and Hali (all very likely now)

That gets the Chiefs to 25.7M ~ in cap space. Ford and Bailey may also be on the cutting block. Another ~8.7M and ~6M respectively.

I'll disagree here to. Cousins is the better QB and he's younger.
Younger yes but by no tangible metric is getting better. It's not even really close . He's fine and he will get paid like he's elite but he's tier 3 or 4 at best . Worse if you value winning as part of the formula

This is about as good as the Chiefs could've come out of this outside of getting a top pass rusher.

I'm pleased even though Alex Smith had a really good year last year. His deep ball has really improved but Chiefs defense let him down.

You haven't been paying attention?
To what ? Cousins is going to get more than 71 million guaranteed and he's not as good . He's just not. There's no QB tangible measurement that would favor him over Smith . I know you love Kirk probably but you guys are going to be better with Alex .

I'm guessing they keep Bailey and Ford. Not that Dee Ford has earned it but they might not have a good plan B.

We saved like 4 mil a year, downgraded at QB, and it cost us a 3rd rounder and the best slot CB in the league - whos 22 years old. Oh and our QB is now 4 years older. That is a catastrophic failure.
For real how is Smuyhva downgrade ? Let's talk actual performance here and jot some mythical "potential " . It's not close man. It just isn't
