Oh, absolutely.

In MLB, they can compare ERA or OPS against league averages and derive stats like ERA+ and OPS+ to see how individual numbers compared against those league averages. A 150 means they were 50% better than league average, which is usually pretty impressive.

Now, I did a quick cursory evaluation of Gretzky's goal totals versus what the average goal total was for all the teams in the league. He scored goals over 17 seasons at a rate of 17.1% of the league average goals scored per team. I discounted 1994-95 due to strike and he must have been injured in 92 as he only played 45 games.

Ovechkin has scored goals over 14 seasons at a rate of 21.2% of the league average goals scored per team. I discounted 2012-2013 due to strike when they only played 48 games.

The argument can be made, although this was very basic and could probably be better tested.
That WaPo writer used comparisons of average goal rates per game versus what Gretzky and Ovechkin were able to produce in their respective eras. It’s a fancy way of saying that goalies just weren’t as good back then- at least not in the first half of Gretzky’s career.

Using the baseball reference, it would be like asking how many home runs Babe Ruth could’ve hit, if only the ball had been juiced and he had access to BALCO or A-Rod’s magic chewing gum. Even with removal of the two-line offsides rule, Ovechkin manages to march towards 895, when his contemporaries score at a comparatively lower clip.

Interesting. Is it a widely held position that Lemieux was a better player than Wayne Gretzky? I was always under the impression that he stood alone.

Milan Lucic can't get any love, even for a 'best of the worst' rating...

I wouldn't say it's widely held.

I will say that I'm not alone in thinking that at their peaks' Mario > Wayne.

He'll stand alone, he'll walk a straight line, what the hell else do you need to do to get served around here?
