Ovechkin tied Gretzky earlier tonight with the 12th 40-goal season.

Were it not for a missed season (labor), a shortened season (labor), a pandemic shortened season, and Dale Hunter's coaching skills, he'd (1) be at 15 (or more) 40-goal seasons by now, (2) we'd all be getting pumped for him to surely past Gretsky next season, and (3) we would be discussing whether or not he would pass the 1,000 goal mark in his career.

For reference, OV has 122 goals in the last 3 seasons despite one of those being almost cut in half by COVID. That didn't stop him from selfishly backing up the shot truck and unloaded of dumptruck of pucks uselessly at the net.

I hope he breaks the record by getting credited for an own goal scored by the other team. You know, where he’s the last to touch the puck when the other team shoots it into their (usually) empty net on a delayed call. And I hope the delayed call is on OV. That way after the celebration, he goes and feels shame.

In summation, it would be odd, cool and still technically an empty netter.

I hope the night he goes out to tie the record to a standing room only crowd, he walks to the center ice before the game and cashes in two goals in the bank. Assuming of course the league wisely adopts some sort of 'goal in the bank' rule.
The the TV camera focuses on some drunk fan looking at their ticket saying "I paid 4 grand to see him tie the record".
