701!! Unconfirmed reports say that a shot on goal was required for this goal to be scored.

I do not pretend to be a hockey expert, the Caps is pretty much the only team I watch. But I do know enough to know that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time. But I honestly believe Ovi is the greatest goal scorer and would like to get your thoughts.

The reason I say this is the goal tending. Looking at The Great One's highlights the goalies sure gave up a lot of open space. Today they are so big there is like inches of net to shoot at now, the goalies appear to me to be so much better now. I understand the equipment is different today and that's an advantage or Ovi, but am I wrong about the goal tending?

Yes, they scored more goals back then, but wouldn't there be other players right up there with Gretzky that Ovechkin would need to pass in order to get to him????

And it's a fair argument that he's one of the best goal scorers ever.
Just not THE best.

Possibly. But again we are talking about Wayne Gretzky here, there was nobody at his level. So I guess I'm trying to compare Ovi to Wayne as he is the bar and again strictly goal scoring as obviously Gretzky was a far better all around player. So is it understood that goal scoring is harder now? Seems that way to me which makes what Ovi is doing even more impressive. What is the argument against Ovi being the greatest ever given that? I'm not arguing, just wanted to learn from those who know more about this than I do.

As far as goal scoring is concerned, my Mt. Rushmore would be Gretzky, Brett Hull, Mike Bossy, and Alex Ovechkin. I put Gretzky on there because he leads the pack, the other three guys are just pure goal scorers.

/Honorable mention to Maurice Richard.

I would want to compare their season goal totals versus the league average in that season.
They would be a certain % higher and you could start with that.

You could probably go to hockey-reference.com and figure all that out.

Was going to critique you, but looked closer. Almost Mattola'd myself. I would put the Rocket ahead of Brett Hull by a foot. :D

Mmm, I am not sure I would say "far". Gretzky was slick, but OV has a physical element that Dave Semenko is thankful Gretz never had. The two had very different skill sets.

As much as anything, Wayne's hockey IQ is what sets him apart for me. He saw the game so differently from anyone else plus had the skills to exploit his vision.

Not for nothing, but Ovechkin is a +81 in his career.
Gretzky had seasonal +/- of 78, 80, and 100 in three separate seasons.
He was +520 overall.

That was some vision.

.

From age 34 and beyond, Wayne essentially became a 20-25 goal scorer. 50 goals as a 34 year old is a given for ov this season. Ovs physicality sets him up nicely for the next few years. Plus there’s the meldonium :bolt:

On that note, Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from tennis today - Never was the same after she was caught doping.

Comparing players from different eras is tough. If Ovechkin had played in 1979-1999, he’d perhaps have even more goals than Gretzky. Hell, a lot of the earlier guys Gretzky faced weren’t even butterfly.

Oh, absolutely.

In MLB, they can compare ERA or OPS against league averages and derive stats like ERA+ and OPS+ to see how individual numbers compared against those league averages. A 150 means they were 50% better than league average, which is usually pretty impressive.

Now, I did a quick cursory evaluation of Gretzky's goal totals versus what the average goal total was for all the teams in the league. He scored goals over 17 seasons at a rate of 17.1% of the league average goals scored per team. I discounted 1994-95 due to strike and he must have been injured in 92 as he only played 45 games.

Ovechkin has scored goals over 14 seasons at a rate of 21.2% of the league average goals scored per team. I discounted 2012-2013 due to strike when they only played 48 games.

The argument can be made, although this was very basic and could probably be better tested.
