Yankees retiring #21 for Paul O'Neill on August 21st.

Strange they wait 11 years and several issuances to other players in the meantime.

Sox have three in the top 29 (Casas, Mayer and Yorke), and then no one else in the top 114.

What happened with Jeter Downs? Thought he was one of the prizes of the system.

Some injuries but an absymal season nonetheless. There is some concern about his bat path that it could lead to swing and misses on inside high fastballs. FWIW he had only played 12 games in AA in 2019 and then there was no minor league season in 2020, so he went to AAA the next year with little experience above A+ at the age of 22 (which is young for AAA). 2022 will be a huge year for him.

This just seems like they're trying to get fans nostalgic about the 90's and cash in. That's not to say that he isn't a significant part of the franchise (26.7 WAR in 9 seasons and was a pretty big part of the four WS teams), but I feel like there were better Yankees players that haven't gotten such an honor. I think it's a joke that the Yankees haven't retired Randolph's number (and he should be in Cooperstown) or Ruffing's, and #9 should have been retired for Nettles rather than Maris.

edit: oh god, I said Rudolph

I loved the hell out of Paul O'Neill, but the idea that he was more integral to the Yankees overall success the last 30 or so years than Jorge Posada is a head scratcher to me.

Posada's #6 all time in catcher OPS but to this franchise, he seems to be an afterthought.

It would be like the Sox retiring Johnny Damon or Trot Nixon's number

Well, O'Neill did win a batting title and play on 4 championship teams, but yeah, 125 OPS+ over 9 years as a Yankee. Nice production, but monument park is a bit of a reach.

Should have put his number on all the water coolers instead…..

Take Reggie’s number out and put Roy White’s number there….a true Yankee

Sweet swinging Greg Bird signs a minor league deal with the Blue Jays.

I'm sure there's no chance he will haunt his former employer.

:rolleyes2:
