Huh. Tampa sends catcher Ronaldo Hernandez (BA 56th ranked prospect in 2019) to Boston in exchange for 2 pitchers Boston DFAed.

On the face, this is a bit of a head scratcher for Tampa.

The Rays got Francisco Mejia in the Snell trade. I guess they view him as the catcher of the future?

Hernandez is also 23 and still in high-A ball. He’s hardly on the fast track. Regardless, interesting to get a prospect out of 2 pitchers the Sox didn’t want.

He was still the 13th ranked prospect in the #1 farm system in baseball.

I don't get it right now, but I will not be surprised at all if he's broken somehow. Tampa FO doesn't make many dumb moves.

It’s definitely worth the gamble from the Red Sox perspective. But evaluating all these guys is tougher given that there was no minor league season in 2020. I always assume TB knows what they are doing.

Red Sox acquired C Ronaldo Hernandez and INF Nick Sogard from the Rays for RHP Chris Mazza and LHP Jeffrey Springs.

Hernandez has put up intriguing offensive numbers in the lower minor leagues and ranked as the No. 14 prospect in the Rays' system as of 2020, per MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old backstop is a nice pickup for Boston, especially considering that Mazza and Springs were both designated for assignment recently.

Hernandez is a nice get, pretty surprised with that considering what we gave up (these two were likely going to be DFA'd). Even more surprising that he'd come from Tampa. Hmm. Still like this trade. Sogard's power is nonexistant, but I like his OBP skills. I could see him being a very similar player to his brother.

that being said, I wouldn't be shocked if Springs turns in a solid season. I like his stuff and thought he pitched better than his ERA. He feels like a Tampa project.
