Make that 17 homers in May

This is an article from a couple of years ago I stumbled upon regarding the All Star game then. Wonder if Encarnacion will be forgotten this year?

While Joey Bats is grateful to fans across North America and the Caribbean for their online and in-stadium support, he was upset about the exclusion of teammate Edwin Encarnacion, who carried the Jays’ offence for the first month and a half of the season. Encarnacion, normally a first baseman this season but listed on the ballot as a DH, was outpolled in fan voting by Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and in player balloting by White Sox comeback candidate Adam Dunn. No shame there.

“There’s always different events that can happen,” Bautista said, referring to a potential injury that could yet open the door to Encarnacion’s inclusion on the AL roster.

“(Edwin) put the team on his back when I wasn’t doing well. To have his RBIs, average and home runs, it’s a disappointment he wasn’t included.”

So far it ain't looking good. Even Melky is ahead of him.

reasonable list, though you could go with Iannetta/Gomes/Perez at catcher. Jaso's pretty underrated though, and I thought Norris would break out this year (though the numbers will probably regress somewhat). Case could be made for Moss at 1B and Dozier at 2B (another underrated player).

Encarnacion's batting .284/.350/.789 this month. His BABIP for the month? .190 (it was .312 in April, which wasn't a very good month for him).

Rough game for Boston tonight. I thought Price hit Ortiz as payback for Sunday. But the one that hit Carp did not look intentional. However since it was close and he had already been warned he should have been tossed at that point. Ortiz should have also been tossed for his actions during the little meeting at the foul line. With the wet conditions how can they then eject Workman for the pitch that very easily could have slipped from his hand?

Safe to say the Red Sox players at least hates the Rays more than the Yankees.

Ortiz went off after the game

David Ortiz on Tampa Bay's David Price:

"I have a lot of respect of the guy, man, but it's over. I have no more respect for him. Last year we kick his ass in the playoffs, he went off, talking (expletive) about everybody, (television analyst) Tom Verducci and everybody, players.

We got to talk on the phone. We kind of straightened things out. He was kind of upset, you know? Me, as a veteran, I’m going to kind of let him know how things go in this game. Later on he called me and apologized because he knows he was wrong. He apologized in public. He apologized to myself and everything was cool. So first at-bat of the season against me he drilled me? I mean, it’s a war. It's on. Next time he hits me he better bring the gloves. I have no respect for him no more."

On getting hit in the first inning: "I was surprised for a minute until I watched the video. I thought everything was cool. You can’t be acting like a little girl out there. You’re not going to win every time. When you give it up, that’s an experience for the next time. But when you’re to be acting like a little (expletive) every time you give it up, bounce back like that and put your teammates in jeopardy, that’s going to cost you."

On the benches clearing and his going after Price: "I was going to let him know. I respect everybody in this league and I get a certain respect from everybody. If you’re mad because I take you deep twice, I’m going to let you know I have almost 500 homers in this league. It’s part of the game, son.

"He knows he screwed up. He did that on his own. No manager say anything to him. No player was comfortable with the situation. He did that on his own, which is bull---. He can’t get somebody out, he can’t be doing that s---. I’m done.”

^Damn, good for him. Reading that I can see he restrained himself in the past, take the high road and be patient. Looks like his patience wore thin. What was said had to be said.

Safe to say the Rays have become the biggest rivals for the Red Sox. There just hasn't been nearly as much intensity between the Sox and Yanks in recent years as there was in the early aughts.

that being said, the complaints from Sox players about the "unwritten rules" were dumb. I had no complaints with the Rays stealing with a 5-run lead. They're just playing baseball.

However, the Ortiz HBP probably stems from Ortiz "admiring" a home run off Price in the playoffs. Ortiz wasn't showing him up though... he was checking to see if the ball was fair.

Disagree. It's disrespectful to be stealing 3rd with a 5 run lead when you're already in scoring position on second base.

Yea, I've never seen Ortiz admire any of his HR's.

In other news, I saw a lop eared rabbit riding a scooter today., with a carrot in his mouth.
