Pierre Mcguire said it best the other day on the talk radio show I listen to coming home from work. That both Center and puck moving Dmen are needed on teams because they help transition the defensive game to the offensive game smoothly. When you look at the top teams right now, they are strong at center and have a dman that can move the puck.
Several teams are lacking a good center man right now but teams that have one aren't going to give theirs up.

Sorry to say that the Devils are lacking in both these positions.

The other thing that I found interesting is Pierre also said that teams more easily give up wingers than a center or defenseman since they're easier to replace.
