Girardi decisions tonight been really questionable.

No need to go to Betances so early in the game. It wasn't a high drama situation.

Runner on 1st with 1 out. You really could not have gone to any other pitcher in the pen and saved Betances for either later in the 7th when we had 2 outs or the 8th?

With that homer by Drew in the top of the inning, Girardi was trying to keep the MO on our side. But there had to be better ways then what he did. With this game now, we lose Miller for the rest of this series.

Heck of a win.

First winning streak of the year.

Now hopefully we can win 1 of these next 2 to give us our first series win of the year

I am pulling for Stephen Drew. That grand slam was awesome.

I just have a hard time believing that the Red Sox are going to be in a pennant race with Edward Mujica as their closer. He's my boy and I love him, but it's hard to believe he's the closer for the top team in the AL East. He was never even setup man for the Padres!

Red Sox have a number of issues with that pitching staff.

And let's not pretend like Buccholtz isn't among them. Statistically one of the least efficient pitchers in the division last season.

This bullpen is garbage.

Look like we'll lose another series

Napoli's been one of the best hitters on the team over the last two seasons. There's more to hitting than batting average, cupcake.

No he hasn't. He has been a damn strikeout machine.

So because a player strikes out a lot, that automatically makes him a bad player? Was Mike Trout a bad player? Grady Sizemore (pre-injuries)?

Napoli had the 3rd best OPS+ on the team in 2013 (behind only Ortiz and Carp (who probably shouldn't count because he only had 289 PA). And he had the 3rd best OPS+ on the team last year behind Ortiz and Betts (like Carp, he had limited action, getting only 213 PA). Napoli finished 6th among 1B in WAR in 2013 behind only Chris Davis, Paul Goldschmidt, Joey Votto, Freddie Freeman and Brandon Belt. And finished ahead of guys like Adrian Gonzalez and Eric Hosmer (even though Hosmer had TEH BATTING AVERAGE and less strikeouts!!!11).

Throw out all the numbers you want. The guy swings and misses way too much and has trouble squaring it up when he does make contact. So far this year he is hitting a whopping .129. He had 187 strike outs in 2013, 133 last year in only 415 plate appearances.

The majority of a player's K's tend to come when there's no chance of making a "productive out," so why does it matter if he K's or flies out in those situations?

The overwhelming majority of Napoli's K's last year (80% to be exact) came in situations where making an out another way wouldn't have been anymore productive than the K.

So you're saying if nobody is on base then it is alright to strike out? I want to make sure I understand. I know if you strike out there is 0% chance of getting on base so someone else might have one of those productive out opportunities.

He only had 55 RBIs last year hitting in the middle of the lineup, most times hitting behind Papi. How many of those productive outs did he actually have?

If you ground out or fly out or ground out there is 0% chance of getting on base, no?

You can't simply presume he's getting hits if he puts the ball in contact in lieu of striking out. So you compare K's to other forms of outs, and striking out in most cases isn't any less productive than making another type of out.

You can assume if he puts the ball in play he has a much better chance of getting on base than if he strikes out. And as noted, Mike Napoli strikes out way too much...especially for someone who doesn't hit the long ball anymore. This isn't David Ortiz or Miguel Cabrera we're talking about.
