The guy gutted thru a season without hitting the DL. Went WAAAY too long several times early-mid season or that ERA would be about average.

Yeah, a product of BAD middle relief that JV had to pitch into the 6th/7th on some days when he clearly had nothing.

That was a clutch performance by JV today over Sale and he even went long enough to not let the bullpen get involved.

Still won't put money on him in a WS game, all star game or any tough lineup but he actually seems to be getting a bit better.

Chris Sale is such a coward. He throws at VMart, who just so happens to be 15 for 28 against him with 3 HR's and 2 2B's. He knows the Tigers are in a pennant race and wouldn't be able to retaliate.

I hope the Tigers re-sign Scherzer, for the simple fact, he is the hardest thrower on Detroit right now. I want him to return the favor next year to Jose Abreu and after beaning him, he needs to tell him to thank Sale.

Better yet -- Let Rondon hit Abreu with 100 mph fastball up and in.

Heh-heh.... yeah, V-mart is getting help from a fan in his home games. Hey, Sale -- FYI, Victor's batting average is .323 at home, .346 on the road. 13 HR at home, 18 HR on the road. Conspiracy theory blown up.

go read CBS sportsline. the recap of the game is all about Sales hitting VMart. he denies it. that's being a punk. he couldn't even admit it.
then if you scroll down about 40 lines...itssays.. oh yeah.Verlander threw 8 innings of 1 run ball.

thats typical of the national media looking past the Tigers. If that was a Dodger or a Yankee or a Brave pitcher....they would fo on and on about that 8 inning effort..you know it

Maybe the media is on to what non Tigers fans here have known for a while now, the Tigers are pretenders, very good team who can't get it done when it matters...

In other news, the Tigers have announced their first give-away promotion of 2015: Free Binoculars Day for when Sale and the Chisox come to town.

Tough break for Phil Hughes today. One out away from earning another $500K, screwed over by a rain delay. Hopefully the Twins will throw him a bone and use him in relief.

Hughes has had a very nice year for the Twins. Could have been even better if not for a horrid Twins defense.

Yea, it was easy to see him having a major improvement over the last few years since he pitched well on the road and seemingly had trouble only in Yankee Stadium (particularly with the long ball).

Did not see the historic BB/9 rate coming though, which is the 7th best since 1900 and 3rd best since 1920 (Silva and Saberhagen had seasons with better BB/9s).

You can't feel too bad for a guy who will make $8.5M for the season but it probably makes good business sense for Jim Pohland to just give Hughes the bonus. He likely won't seeing how the Pohlands are notorious cheapskates but it would still be a smart move.

They should pay Phil the money. FAs notice how teams treat their employees. And someday it might not be Ricky Nolasco or Phil Hughes type FAs who are considering coming to Minny.

Mr. I would. No doubt.

Scherzer wont be back. They should have traded him last offseason while they still could. I would rather see them retain price than scherzer. Max clearly doesnt want to stay in detroit since he turned down that contract and I cant imagine both price and scherzer with JVS contract as well.

scherzer might be gone. but trade him? should have> you kidding???
he is a big reason we are going to coast to another ALCS and then win it all in the world series.
isn't 1 ring worth holding him his last year????

The Tigers will tender Max and not try to resign him. The draft picks and using the cash to resign Price is a smart move. Price eats more innings and is left handed. The reality of the situation is Detroit is not New York or LA. They can't afford to give out 100 + million dollar contracts. It's a shame but thats life in the AL Central.

As for trading Max last year it all depended on what Detroit could have gotten. Robbie Ray and a bunch of journeymen....no. Will Meyers ....yes.

Won't bother me that much if he leaves. Id much rather see them extend Price after this season.

What doesn't need to happen is Max leave and Price go into the season without an extension.

Its a big gamble. Yes, it only makes sense if they win the world series. Otherwise it was a bad move to keep him.
