Meanwhile, Verlander's already very high ERA just got a bit higher.

yeah that ERA is kinda high
BUT
when they needed him the most Verlander gets a W for his team. I know winning is not that important to some of you. better to look good than to win...

You do realize Verlander has a .476 W-L%, right? Ranked 65th among 95 qualified starting pitchers. So no, Verlander hasn't even been doing much "winning."

Most of the top pitchers in the league in W-L% have very good ERAs.

he wants to help his team WIN. he did.

Considering his ERA and W-L%, he wasn't "helping them win."

And, that's the catch with May, he always has had a big crowd who thought he would end up being a reliever.

If it's any consolation, he looks somewhat like Danny Duffy did his first couple of years and now has tolerable control as a starter.

The command issues are very worrisome. His walk rates in the minors were always a bit high. But I wouldn't go as far as saying he sucks after three starts.

DOES keeping your team in it..and getting a W help your team?

He has a sub-.500 win percentage. The Tigers' win percentage is .522.

Trevor Bauer had walked 29 batters (with 28 strikeouts) in his first 33.1 innings in the majors. This year, he's walked 45 batters in 118.1 innings (3.42 BB/9, while not great by any means, it's still respectable and a huge improvement). Bauer was pretty much viewed as a bust not long ago. His 2014 numbers are still pretty meh (4.18 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 4.02 xFIP), but they're definitely headed in the right direction. Could be in for a good 2015.

Verlander is 11-11. That's .500, sir.

No, JV still wasn't anywhere near his old self, and 4 ER in 5.2 innings doesn't look that great on paper. But I watched the whole game -- coming off a shoulder problem, he reached back and got 96 a couple of times to get Ks with men on base. The RBI double by Mauer was on a good pitch -- a changeup about 12 inches off the ground that Mauer just went down and got. Credit to Joe on that one, rather than blame on JV. The 2-run double to Plouffe was a mistake, but if Mauer makes an out, Plouffe doesn't get to the plate that inning.

Overall, JV settled the waters a bit after Minny had scored 32 runs in 16 innings the previous two games. Not vintage JV, but it was what the Tigers needed.

Ah, okay. BB-Ref still had him at 10-11 when I used their sorted SP stats yesterday. They must have updated later in the day.

I'd agree that Verlander is fortunate to be 11-11 with his other numbers. Especially when you see someone like Danny Duffy at 8-11 with a 2.53 ERA.

To doug's point though, if Verlander was just "cashing a paycheck", he would have gone on the DL, as many pitchers would have. Say what you will, JV is a fierce competitor.

Im a huge JV supporter but come on man, outside of last years playoffs he hasnt looked like JV in almost two seasons. He has been downgraded to their fifth best starter. I still believe they should have sat him for a couple of months earlier this season, something is not right physically.

Great research, I think bauer will be elite and him and salazar could provide a very compelling 1-2 in cleveland in a couple of years.
