Being happy with 60% of an aces production doesn't make it the same though.

Volquez pitches less innings. With less Ks and a higher ERA and WHIP. The innings drop off being the most important. And what I based my post from several days ago off. An excellent bullpen is great, but 40-50 extra innings of work will matter.

Volquez - 19 starts 112 inn, Shields 20 starts 121 inn, this year, no difference in rotation with either one. We statistically aren't missing Shields one bit. KC didn't lose anything in that switch. The rest of the rotation's, that was the same as last year, injuries are mattering more.

KC didn't have a problem with the pen innings last season and actually added Hochevar and Madson, KC's bullpen is deeper than last year, their scrub unit is better than most teams pens.

I am not sure the feeling is fear... knowing the Tigers are on the books for tens of hundreds of millions to a pitcher who cannot get below 5.00 ERA.. the feeling is not fear. No, it is more a satisfaction.

Meanwhile my own Twins stunk up the place. 14-1 is tough. Lost Sano for a few days too. Twins may struggle to keep up with KC, but I think we can stay ahead of Detroit for a while.

That Sano injury may be a blessing.

Get Arcia up here. Let him mash for a few days.

Then Sano comes back and we roll with both the mashers.

Is it if the remaining monies are reinvested to say Morales and Madson? Food for thought. The Rios deal sucks out loud, but they have kind of hit jackpot on a lot of these signings for the most part.
Morales was a great signing, but he doesn't help Volquez go deeper into games.

I made a comment on starting pitching and a DH is now involved....

Shields is a Padre, what he's doing this year has nothing to do with Volquez. And Volquez isn't going 227 innings this season.

Yes, but the finer things in life cost money, no?
Sure, of course it does.

And that has nothing to do with what I said originally. Or with Bums pretending that last years James Shields and this years EV are equals.

Morales is better than Butler, Moustakas is better at the plate this year than last. So is Hosmer. Attendance is up. And your "#1" starter is going to pitch less innings than last year. Which I see as a weakness over the course of the season.

crap, can say that about 1/2 of the position players as well. I am just

Look, shields brought a lot of intangebles, no doubt that part was a huge loss, but KC's record is better so its definitely not showing there. Comparing Edison's stats this year to shield's last season stats and this years, currently we are down only in innings pitched by about 10 innings, the rest of their stats are pretty damn equal but of course that can change quickly.

I heard on the radio interview of our operations manager that they still want Arcia to work out a few kinks, some lefty gave him trouble and struck him out 3 times.

Shields is an innings machine. As reliable of a right handed innings eater(that term usually means that's all a guy brings, but he brings high quality innings and lots of em) as there is.

He got MVP votes, for good reason.

Volquez has performed very well, but he's on pace for significantly less of what I consider the most important thing out of a starter. And that's at a clip that would put him at his second best total of his career, (maybe it'd be third best, IDK... didn't do any math when I actually looked at stats hours ago after you told me to make a comparison.)not an expected normal output.
