What is the rule book definition of a swing? Is it the wrists or the barrel of the bat?

There is actually no official ruling on a swing or not. It's open to interpretation from the umpire.

I personally see it as a swing if the batters wrists rotate. If they stay stiff, it's a check swing. If they break, its a swing. Some umpires judge it by how far the bat goes in front of the plate.

edit: so basically it's a crap-shoot.

Anyone see the play from San Diego last week? Harper chopped one to the 1st baseman, but the ump called a foul because the ball hit Harpers leg. Only prob was that the ball never hit his leg. A Slam was hit by the next batter.
