No I didn't. I was talking strictly about the DH today. Not the 3 game series as a whole

Gotcha. That's most likely. Something like 85% of double headers result in a split.

I've noticed recently that teams have been switching out their scheduled starters for the second game with some kind of long reliever. I believe Tomlin was supposed to start today's game, but when yesterday got rained out, they switched it to Merritt.

I don't understand that.

Yankees too
CC schedule day, but Montgomery gets the start

I guess it was just to get CC in the Sox series

But not like all these games aren't pretty important

Yeah, but that doesn't explain what the doubleheader has to do with it. The Yankees knew they were playing the Sox, if they wanted Sabathia in that series, why didn't they have Montgomery scheduled for today's game regardless?

What is it about a double header that leads to these moves?

Sale turned to that slider to shut down the Blue Jays. Here's how he did it, courtesy of Sarah Langs of ESPN Stats & Info:

  • He used his slider 41 percent of the time, the fourth time this season he has used his slider at least 41 percent of the time. He hasn't allowed more than a run in any of those starts.

  • A lot of what he did was much more like the first-half Sale, rather than the guy who had a 5.40 ERA in August. He got swinging strikes on 27 percent of his sliders, his third-highest rate this season and highest since late June.

  • He got first-pitch strikes against 75 percent of batters, his highest rate since July 6.

Announced attendance at Tropicana Field tonight: 3,485. All tickets were $10 general admission, and all proceeds from the series go to aid the victims of the disaster in Houston.

Francona did the same thing, inserting Merritt for today's 2nd game. I've seen it multiple times this season.

There has to be some strategic advantage to it, I'm just not sure what it is. I haven't spent much time thinking about it, I just wanted to see if anyone on here was aware of it.

If the Sox don't hold the division lead, he might not even get the CY.
it's an award for the best pitcher in the league, not the best pitcher on a division winner. Kluber's the only pitcher remotely close to Sale in any categories and he has like 23 fewer innings.
