This is true. The DH adds an extra starting-players salary to the roster.

However, the counter-argument to this is to simply add a 26th roster spot and eliminate the DH altogether. This should appease the union. However, expanding the roster just further reduces the required strategy that the non-DH adds to the game. Using your #2 catcher as a PH is a HUGE risk. But with a 26th spot, a would guess a lot of teams would go with the 3rd catcher, making the catcher-as-PH situation not so dire.

But, between the two options (universal DH or 26th roster spot) I would chose the 26th roster spot 9 days a week.

I agree about the 26th spot vs. DH. I also think most teams would carry a third catcher. However, given the state of backup catchers, I'm not sure it would make much offensive difference.

Many teams would probably add a 14th pitcher.

Good points.

However, 3rd catcher or 14 pitcher, they both diminish the strategic difficulty in having the pitcher hit.

However, upon further thought, the 14th pitcher may further specialize the bully, and I actually REALLY like that. Adds extra value to the depth.

Maybe I can really get behind the 26th man...

Just realized...

7/13/13: Timmeh throws a No-No vs the Padres

7/13/14: Bum hits his second Salami of the season in a game where his battery mate, Buster Posey, also hits a Salami.

7/13/15: Matt Cain hits for the cycle, while throwing his second career perfecto?
