Yeah, our chances are slim, but so are most teams. 16 teams make the playoffs. Do some math and that's 6.25% per team. Some obviously have a lot greater odds than others, so I estimated us at 8% if we bought, which is above average.

That said, yes, everyone has a chance, but we're doing this the right way. That's the point. We're building from within. Instead of having to trade for a vet at the deadline, we're bringing up youth (and even vets) to improve.

I would much, much rather have our younger guys blossom throughout a playoff run than have to pay for older ones and then lose them next season. Now, if we keep it rolling and make the playoffs, we stay on track to be a powerhouse team in the near future or one of those teams that maybe has a 20% or more chance to win it all.
I feel we could've gotten better this season giving us a shot without jeopardizing our future at all. AWAZ listed about 12 prospects on the rise along with our cap space we will have to sign a top free agent or two we will be just fine going forward. Not to mention playoff experience for the entire team would benefit us greatly going forward.

Pittsburgh picks up guy at the dealing and wins that's a fact. Nashville picked up a little forward depth last season and went from last wild card to the cup. just sayin.

Pittsburgh had already won a Cup the year before...Lol They were a favorite to win it all again no matter what they did. That's what tanking for Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, Staal etc. eventually got them.

Nashville already had one of the best defenses and goalies in the league, so they weren't far off either.

Both teams had young guys step up and produce too.

What Washington does is win the division and then lose in the first or second round, so I'd say they have next to zero shot at winning it all...Lol
Washington has the 8th best odds at winning the cup this season.

this season we have Gee Jake Couts Prov etc without tanking which this season are equally as good than the guys listed for Pitt. They go out and pick up solid players when we stand pat. Thats what makes them the favorite and not us.

That's just it. We have gotten better this season and our odds could be slightly improving with each passing day. We've done it all internally though, which I think is a lot better than spending picks/prospects and then losing the players in the offseason.

The playoff experience for the entire team can still benefit us greatly, yes. I don't expect to go out and beat a powerhouse team with our current roster, but maybe we can win a round or two and then push one of them to the limit. That will get us primed and ready to take their spot in the near future.

Uh no, that's not it. Teams are favorites before the season even starts and then, as you'd expect, the teams that had the best chance to win it in the first place go out and make moves at the deadline to get it done.

You keep naming those teams, but we're not one of them. Not yet at least, but it's slowly coming along.

Shitsburgh tanked to get maybe 2 of the best 3 players of the last 20 years of hockey. You can't compare any of our players to those players, so stop doing it.

But, you seem to think they are winning just because they buy at the deadline every year...Lol You need the team in place already to consistently do that year after year. Their Cup window is open right now, so they are getting after it while they still can.

We're still rebuilding here. Why on earth would a team that is rebuilding buy at the deadline? Yes, we look ahead of schedule at times, but how often does a team that is this unpredictable or streaky win a Cup? Where is the rock solid defense and elite netminder that is going to help us lift the Cup this year?

I think we can make the playoffs, win a round or two and absolutely grow from this leaps and bounds, but to win it all is asking a lot of some really young players.

Our pieces aren't in place quite yet. You have to be patient with this.

This season point stats:
Malkin 89
Gee 85
Kessell 79 oh by the way this guy was a pretty good pick up
Jake 78
Crosby 77
Couts 68
Ghost 53
Letang 44
Prov 34
Matta 26

Id say we have a team in place. Yet they go out at the deadline and we stand pat

We can buy at the deadline because we have so many prospects (Awaz) listed them) and so much cap room that if we bought at this years deadline it wouldn't effect our future and we would get our young players solid playoff experience.

Yeah, they traded for Kessel in the offseason, by the way, not at a deadline. This offseason, we'll have the cap space and pieces to look at trades like that if we feel our club will be boosted that much by one major piece. Hello, Johnny Tavares.

You can't just put up season point totals from one year and say those players are comparable...Lol

You're acting as if we missed the playoffs already because we didn't buy at the deadline. I'm looking at the standings now. We're still 3rd in the Metro, which gets an automatic playoff bid.

For me, this looks like a pretty damn good year to just see what we have right now with our own squad and no outside influences. There's no chance of mortgaging any future if we literally did not give up anything but a 3rd round pick for Mrazek, but still have the potential to make the playoffs and eliminate a couple teams.

I love Giroux and Voracek as much as anyone, but they are not Crosby and Malkin, so let's just quit that complete bullshit. Couturier is not the scorer that Kessel is either, despite them both having 29 goals this season. Letang is a Norris trophy type defenseman still in his prime or at least close. Maybe Ghost or Provorov get there someday, but right now, you can't compare them.

If you say yes that Washington can win a cup then why not us. We have beaten them 3 times this season and they are just 4 points in front of us. #Whynotus
It goes back to the Jeckyl and Hyde thing for me. Then again I see your point as well. If the playoffs were set up similar for example NFL or March Madness of single elimination, then I would say hell yes we have a real good shot, but in a 7 game playoff, teams like the Pens, TB, Bruins, etc. are in win now mode. I would love to be wrong.

Yup. This is the one piece I am following very close. Trading at the deadline is going to cost a lot more than say the offseason imo. Our defense will have a little more seasoning behind them as well. Our coaching staff is still in the learning the NHL game a bit and still getting familiar with the roster. Goaltending has been up and down all season due to injuries. I believe in the process.

that's right teams like that trade for guys like Kessel in the off season and we trade for all time greats like Lehtera. And yes i can put up point totals from one year and say those players are comparable because im talking about us missing an opportunity THIS SEASON and THIS SEASON they are certainly comparable.

Every one of those teams listed made moves at the deadline to make themselves better. I dont see how you consider TB and Bruins are in win now mode when they are both young and talented and not us in which we should always be in win now mode.

Take it fwiw? Boston is still relatively young, but not as young as we are. TB is in the middle of the pack and comes in the postseason with a ton of playoff experience.
Sizing up the NHL: 2017-18 NHL teams by age, height and...

Shit like this makes me smile after so many years of a dismal farm system.

Morgan Frost (C), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
2017 1st Round Pick, 27th overall
  • 3/14 - 1 goal, 2 assists, 4 shots, 4 PIM, 8 for 17 FOW
  • 3/16 - 2 shots, 2 PIM, 3 for 18 FOW
  • 3/18 - 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots, 16 for 23 FOW
1.67 points-per-game in your draft +1 year is very good. Frost set career-highs in goals (42) and assists (70). He led the OHL in 5v5 points (74) and 5v5 primary points (57). Frost has a chance to be something special.
