The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed guard Adam Snyder to a two-year contract.

Snyder (6-6, 325) has played in 121 games (83 starts) during his eight-year NFL career. He returns to San Francisco after spending the 2012 NFL season with the Arizona Cardinals, where he made 14 starts.

Originally drafted in the third round (94th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft by the 49ers, Snyder has played in 107 games (69 starts) for San Francisco over seven seasons (2005-2011). He signed with the Arizona Cardinals on March 14, 2012 and was released on April 29, 2013.

A 31-year-old native of Fullerton, CA, Snyder attended the University of Oregon where he played in 49 games (35 starts). He was a two-time First-Team All-PAC 10 selection and won the Morris Trophy in 2004 as the top offensive lineman in the PAC 10.

He hails from my birth city so I won't bash him but I can't really imagine why they would sign him.

The only reason I can think of is since Boone is firmly entrenched at RG now they want a guy like Snyder who can fill in at OT if needed along with being able to play RG.

Hope he came super cheap or I'm not a fan of this signing. He was mediocre to shitty in his first lengthy stint as a 49er.

Here are my two thoughts:

1. It was done to turn up the heat on Killgore and Looney, or;
2. They want a better contingency plan if they are thinking about releasing Goodwin

Sando says they plan to use Snyder to be the swing tackle, looney as backup G and C and probably will cut Goodwin and start Kilgore at C.

I do not like that idea at all. He's not a good backup tackle.

I dont really see the point of this move.

Like others have mentioned. He's below average at best at guard. Seems like we have decent depth there.

At tackle, he is shit.

this might be true, but then how DO we obtain a good back up tackle? Sando MAY have meant back-up tackle after Boone?

can't help think this isn't a good sign for Kilgore or Looney?

I'm psychic. Mentioned this very thing this morning in the Goodwin thread. You know! I almost created a specific Adam Snyder thread, but decided it wasn't warranted.

Re: the move, we are paper thin at OT right now. I like Marquhardt (sp???) for IR or the PUP, but we need more depth at the spot. Snyder is a bad starter, but he's fine as the second guy off the bench.

Why? We currently don't have anyone other than our starting RG who can back up the OT spot. Snyder is familiar with the team and the system, can theoretically back up all five spots, and doesn't count in the comp pick formula.

not saying Kilgore and/or Looney aren't any good, won't be good, but if they could hold down RG and C between them, do we need Snyder at C or RG? if we don't need Snyder at C or RG, makes sense to get an OT focused on OT? even if in 'development', that makes more sense than "jack of all trades, master at none"?

looked another way.................you're "touting" Snyder as someone who can man any position on the line, this implies we need him to ALSO cover C and RG? if so, what is this saying about Kilgore and Looney to cover C and RG betwen them?

anyway, just answering your question, not going crazy over this signing. for all we know there's little guarantees?

He's a solid O lineman who can play both Guard positions as well as Center. Can't have enough good O linemen. I'm OK with this signing.

no one will argue that, so the question is.....how well does Snyder play OT? if he's the best back-up OT we can find, so be it.
