wtf 90 mil over 5 years? how is this gonna work under the cap? we still need a RG and another WR

RGs are cheap. With Manning under center, we could pick up fringe NFL players and he would make them tolerable starters. He's done it before. Not to mention that whole draft thing. You can find starting OGs in the 4th or 5th round, and this is a deep class.

Great news that they are going after Manning. Obviously, the Niners were not telling the truth when they earlier stated that they weren't after Manning. Coming off a good year, Smith is nice fall-back option.

problem is we have badwin as well, so the interior line can get blown up if we get some crappy RG on the cheap. if we can jump in front of the texans in the draft that would be huge cuss we can grab konz. no line can handle 2 below average starters, especially when u need to protect a guy who missed a year with neck problems

Oh man. This is just unbelievable. Could this really happen? A more or less healthy Peyton Manning starting for the Niners next year? Jesus.

This sort of crazy, high-profile move goes against my usual inclinations, but man, hard not to be excited at the prospect.

If I would have told you two years ago, that in 2012 our starting QB was going to be Peyton Manning and our #1 WR was going to be Randy Moss, would you have believed me? :-)

Think back two years ago, how outrageous that would have sounded?

Lol that is pretty crazy! NFL/sports is a strange businees. Anythingcan turn in a second.

We had a crappy RG playing last year and nearly made the super bowl. That was with Smith, a guy who isn't exactly known for his quick decision-making and pocket presence. Manning is exceptional in both areas. Smith took more sacks last year than Manning did in his last three seasons combined, and that Indy OL was shaky the past few years.

And again, there is a draft, and lots of interior OL play in year one and play well. The fact that we let Snyder walk also tends to indicate that we have some faith in Kilgore.

Even if WR and OG are a concern, how are they more of a concern with Manning at QB than with Smith at QB? The only reason would be the neck issue, but doctors have cleared Manning to take hits, so the concern seems to be relatively low. It's not as if Smith has been a particularly sturdy player.

You gotta credit Harbaugh for creating an atmosphere and vibe around this team that is convincing our star players to re-sign and attracting star players to come here.

Another small but important item is he won't wind up in Seattle or Arizona regardless of what happens from here on out. That's a big plus all by itself.

I was just about to say that. Agreed. Arizona will have to go with Kolb. Who knows what Seattle is going to do? Maybe bring back Hasselbeck if Manning signs with Titans.

Sorry if it's been posted, but is there any confirmation of this (AZ and SEA being out of the running)?

AZ deadline passed and they awarded Kolb his 7 million. And i dont think manning ever really visited with Seattle. But then again i had no idea he visited with us lol

AZ stated that they're out. Seattle is not mentioned in the latest articles about the teams still in the race. Apparently, Manning refused to visit with Seattle even though the Seahawks professed their love for Manning and had a plane waiting for him.

Just remembered this: "@JedYork Former Colt Pro Bowl QB throwing for #49ers tomorrow." > Harbaugh threw Monday for Moss; Manning was Tues.
