I would feel bad. He's a good guy. How funny would it be if we didn't land Manning and Smith said fuck you and went somewhere else??

That's the situation I'm hoping happens. I rather see CK behind center than AS. Not because I have faith that CK is going to become a household name, but Smith in his 8th season as a starter still struggles to move the ball. Wouldn't surprise me at all if we were in the bottom half of the league in 3 n OUTs.

Iguana and Viper would be on suicide watch. :heh:

He'll get signed though. If not as a starter forsure as a backup.

Well no team seems interested for some reason.

EDIT: I think even David Garrard has received more interest than Smith

They restructured the Kolb deal today though they knew Manning was not in the cards. They must really not trust Kolb, enough for Kolb to not say, f-it pay me if you wanted Manning. Either that or they didn't let Kolb know they were out of the Manning sweepstakes until after he signed, thinking that a cut was imminent. The cut would have likely occured either way so that really shows distrust in Kolb.

Worst case scenario...

We lose out on Manning and Smith, CK starts and sucks, and then we draft Barkley or Laundry Jones next year.

That was before we were publicly known to be in the Manning sweepstakes. They had no reason to think they could get Smith and Smith isn't a guy to waste your time with unless you can sign him. You can risk your time for a Manning. It is also well believed that teams are waiting for Manning to decide and sign before the ball gets rolling. No one went for Flynn until they were told no by Manning. So not saying someone wants to start Alex but is just waiting, but someone may offer Smith a contract if he's not signing with the Niners and is open to compete or backup.

Garrard has not publicly stated his desire to sign with anybody like Alex has and no team has said that about Garrard after going to the conference finals with Garrard.

I can see it happening Niners sign Manning and Condon throws Alex Smith in for free.

If that happened, I would seriously lose respect for Smith. And I'm one of the biggest Alex supporters on the board because I lived in Salt Lake City during his Utah days. I gained a lot of respect (not just fandom) when he decided to com back here because he didn't want to be a good/great backup somewhere.

LOL, I didn't notice that until after I typed it, decided to leave it in but not add a 'pun intended' remark because I thought that would be dorky (not that I'm not already).

Per league sources, Peyton Manning has informed clubs that he plans on making a final decision on his future on Monday or Tuesday.

I should be taking my own advice of never looking too much into things but I read this and got depressed by it for some reason.

My guess is the Niners know Smith isn't a diva in his dealings with the press, Smith has enough respect of Manning to understand but confident in himself enough to not sign a low deal, and I bet the Niners offered a low deal - backup money for short term with incentives for starting production. Condon knew that he could get full pay for Manning, most for Smith here, and that the Niners were interested in Manning. I think if the Niners told Smith they were going for Manning, he'd be trying to shop around (maybe he is) but if it was just a possibility and teams are waiting for Manning first, then I could see him turning down the offer (leaving it on the table, or in his court) to revisit in once Manning's not a threat. If Smith were better, he'd force something or get offers despite his love for the Niners, but as it is now, he's not perceived worth he hastle if he says he likes it here.

If Manning wants a ring its obvious the Niners are his choice. If its money then he lands somewhere else. Where he signs will say if its money or winning. Neither the Titans nor the Broncos with Manning are better than the Niners.

Damn, this is like waiting for the start of the draft.
