Michael Kim:

So... Luck replaces Manning in Indy, where Manning replaced Harbaugh, who may coach Manning in the Bay Area, where he coached Luck.

Appartently Manning wants the same 5 year deal with all the teams. It would be exactly like the one he gave up in Indy. Sources say all three teams involved, Denver, San Fran and Tenn all have accepted those terms. (Sources were unnamed I heard about it from WEEI boston) The difference in the contracts would be injury clauses and stuff.

This has only been said a couple hundred thousand times already. Eric Branch:

Re: Peyton Manning to the 49ers: SF plays the Giants and Eli Manning at home next year. A playoff meeting wouldn't be shocking.

Peyton Manning reportedly isn't thrilled with the idea of playing in future Manning Bowls. #49ers

I wonder if Condon told his client Alex Smith about the 49ers interest in Manning before the news came out today?

So he is scared to play his little bro. Wouldnt it be worse to meet him in the SB instead of the NFC playoffs?

I would imagine most would say it would be worse but what is more likely, too, though? Anyways, I hate even talking about small things like this because there are so many feelings that go with all that that I'm sure we can't even think of.

-------

Smith no longer controls own fate with 49ers

The meat of the article:

Obviously, if the 49ers were to sign Manning, Smith would be out the door. And, now, we have to wonder how things will shake out if Manning signs with the Tennessee Titans, too.

Why?

A year ago, the 49ers went after Hasselbeck, who decided to sign with the Titans, instead. Hasselbeck shares the same agent, David Dunn, as Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke. Hasselbeck later said he almost signed with the 49ers.

There was a point last year when Harbaugh was asked if he thought about bringing in another quarterback to compete with Smith for the starting job.

"Well, we did think about it before, and we thought we had a guy there in free agency," Harbaugh said. "And (it) didn't work out."

There is some skepticism around the league whether the 49ers are really a strong candidate to sign Manning. But there is a lot of skepticism about Smith's future, too.

One NFL executive who is closely monitoring the situation told CSNBayArea.com, "Alex Smith has no place to go."

The Denver Post reported some numbers that the teams are working off -- and it's confirmed -- that the conversation is starting at five years, $90 million with $30 million guaranteed.

With $18 million in cap space, that is not an issue for the 49ers. The issue is whether the 49ers really want to make a huge commitment to Manning, and whether Manning is sold on the idea of playing for the 49ers.

According to one source, Manning does not necessarily want to re-create what he had in Indianapolis. He has asked questions about how things might be different with his new team. That includes the offense, the personnel and how practices are structured.

So, conceivably, Harbaugh could be persuasive in showing Manning how he would fit perfectly into the same kind of scheme the 49ers designed for Alex Smith a year ago.

There's been an offer on the table to Smith for some time. It's a deal, sources have said, that leaves the door open for Colin Kaepernick to take over as the starter in the future. CEO Jed York said Monday that the ball was in Smith's court.

Now, with Harbaugh, Smith's biggest supporter, taking a cross-country flight to talk to Manning, it seems as if Smith has very little control of the matter.

That's what I'm saying. Competition brings the best out of both of you man. I can understand why the Klitschko's refuse to fight one another. Every human being in their right mind would understand the Klitschko's dilemma, but Peyton my friend, this isn't boxing. There's no physical harm in facing your brother in football and there is very little emotional harm to it as well. C'monnn Man ESPN situation.

Also, remembering that this was Maiocco that wrote this, as soon as I read that I immediately thought McCloughan.

I highly doubt he is scared to play him, its more of he doesnt want to be the reason he doesnt make it to the big dance. IF he beats him in the SB, they still both made it to the game in which you work so hard for.

If he comes to SF it won't be about the money, it would be all about winning. We'll see though!

If they pull this off I will be so fucking excited, I am already refreshing my browser like every 2 min lol i have like seven tabs open with different reports and updates going on. c'mon trent get this done

If you've got a twitter account and a smartphone just follow the top NFL guys. They seem to tweet news before they ever post any news in other formats. It's been great for me, especially in helping me jump on any injury issues in fantasy sports.

Report: 49ers emerge as Manning?s ?mystery team? | Shutdown Corner - Yahoo! Sports

As the options dwindled down for Peyton Manning, many NFL insiders warned us to watch out for a "mystery team" to enter the sweepstakes. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, that has now officially happened. Mort reported via his Twitter account that Manning worked out for 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh this week, and took a physical for the team. According to the report by Mortensen and ESPN cohort Adam Schefter, Manning had a throwing session in North Carolina on Tuesday, with Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman in attendance. All accounts indicate that the session was "very impressive."

While it's believed that Manning would prefer to stay in the AFC for multiple reasons (the primary one being his supposed desire not to block brother Eli out of the Super Bowl), the opportunity to play for a team that went 13-3 in 2011 with Alex Smith as their quarterback might be too much to turn down for a man who has just a few years left and isn't coming back to do anything but win a Super Bowl. When the 49ers re-signed cornerback Carlos Rogers, they ensured that all 11 starters would return to one of the NFL's best defenses. The 49ers have taken a flyer on Randy Moss, and you can be sure that they'll be doing more to accentuate their receiver corps in the draft.

The 49ers have been negotiating with Smith, currently an unrestricted free agent, but no deal has been struck. Smith was very efficient in 2011, throwing just five interceptions all season, but San Francisco's passing offense was far from explosive -- by default, it reflected Harbaugh's coaching personality -- tightly controlled, methodical to a fault, and as mistake-proof as possible.

The most obvious question here would be how Manning and Harbaugh would co-exist. There are teams and coaches ready and willing to scrap their offensive game plans to get Manning and let him run the three-wide, single-back, check-with-me offense he did with great success for so many years in Indianapolis. Harbaugh is a very successful former quarterback himself - in fact, he's the starter Manning replaced when the Colts selected Manning with the first overall draft pick in 1998.

Since then, Harbaugh has employed strict control over his schemes at the college and pro level, and the success he's enjoyed means that he doesn't have to defer to anyone. He turned Smith's career around, and he raised Andrew Luck, the man who will replace Manning, in a professional sense.

This is for sure -- if Manning and Harbaugh can come to terms on the offense that will be run, the 49ers field the same defense they did last year, and a few new targets are added, that team will be just about unbeatable on paper. And with all the complications that may arise, that's why a future in the Bay Area might make the most sense among Manning's current options.

Whaatt? Who the hell cares about 2nd place nowadays? That makes absolutely no sense. A wise man once said:

"Like I said, don't call me when you're in my town, call me when you're on my block and I see you next door moving your furniture in,"

This particular wise man made that comment during the Patriots' run at an undefeated season in 2007. Do you think Moss is satisfied at only going to the "big dance"?
