Manning obviously didn't work out at U. of Tenn., as many media would have spotted him. My understanding was it took place at a high school.

6 members of #Titans staff believed to be in attendance for Manning workout: COO Reinfeldt, GM Webster, head coach Munchak, O Coord. Chris Palmer, QB coach Dowell Loggains and strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson. #Titans

Which means when Moss worked out for us, Alex Smith was still under contract. So when Moss worked out, Smith was still the QB of the 49ers.

I imagine if we wanted to make a huge deal out of the Manning thing, we could have worked out Manning and Moss on the same day and had Peyton throw to Randy.

Didn't the 49ers get warned last season when Harbaugh spoke with Alex Smith prior to the "season ending" as did a bunch of other teams, or was that just because of the lockout situation?

#titans worked out Manning this morning. He had lunch with Munchak. Will take a day to think over his options.

It's ridiculous. The same people who are saying we shouldn't start Kap because we should make a push this year with Alex and this defense are saying we shouldn't give Manning a contract because he's "just" a 2-3 solution.

:rolleyes2:

just speaking for myself, the above is not quite. there were two main reasons for Alex Smith as the 2 year stop gap, vs Manning for 2 years:

1. Harbaugh knows Alex Smith fits his scheme, he knew it at a time when we fans were trashing Alex Smith. Harbaugh wants an atheltic QB (and whatever else he saw?) to run his offense, and Peyton is far from 'athletic'. didn't think Manning was a fit in SF, whereas Alex just proved he is AND.......had chemistry with teammates. didn't want to overhaul our scheme and 'disrupt' team chemistry to suit Manning "2 years".

[if we do sign him, then clearly i stand corrected]

2. Salary cap hit for the next 5 or 6 years, pending length of Maning's contract? cause weeks ago it was assumed we'd need BIG bucks to sign him. his anticipated contract would be large enough to affect our cap even when he's gone.

[there's NEW information now on Manning......what i didn't anticipate was Manning contacting the 49ers and pushing a deal himself? cause IF this is true, then his asking price will not be steep like in 'a bidding war". originally didn't like the Manning option but should now be allowed to digest this? his number is still important but you'd think it won't be $18M or whatever he had last year?]

so you're not totally wrong above, just not quite.

I posted this^^^^^^^ on 1/24/1012.

I got one reply that said...."then your opinion is not worth much"

HOW YA LIKE ME NOW???? Oh yeah, I'm just a troll that doesn't know shit.

So happy with that you had to post it on two separate threads??? Attention hog???

A little FYI Nostradamus...making a prediction like "a team from the NFC West will make the playoffs" is not earth shattering or even remotely interesting...

No one criticized you for your knowledge, just your maturity and for making really offensive, stupid comments.

I am one of the people who is not sure if CK is ready yet, but I also know this... The ultimate solution in the NFL is to win the Superbowl. Manning gives us that chance and if it is only for the next 2-3 years... enjoy those 2-3 years. CK will be ready for sure by then to take over.

i'd still want to bring in another qb because we don't know if he'll ever be ready to take over. manning would most likely mean 2-3 year window where we can restructure contracts then eat the dead money for a year while we transition.

not sure what the front office is thinking but just adding manning and calling it a day would be beyond stupid

Yeah, but I mean at the worst we have CK back there waiting. If we find another guy in the mean time then by all means. But the bottom line is I would take 3 years with Manning even if we had to have Shaun Hill starting after he left.

Nothing is given is sports. Look at Cubs fans. Or Browns fans. When you have a shot you have to take it. Having Manning as our QB in no way means that we win a Superbowl, but it makes the chances a whole hell of a lot better. I would take a Superbowl win every decade and the other 9 years the team could win 7 games and I would still be happy.

The thing I think that doesn't get mentioned enough is the Titans front office wanted nothing to do with Manning. Their owner forced their hand to go after him. If I'm going to play for a team I want to play for football minds that want me. Not ones that just drafted a QB in the first round and had no interest until the boss said so.

First and foremost, why? Even with the fumbles, the bad playcalling, the terrible WRs, and all your other reasons for why Smith bears absolutely no responsibility for failing to make the super bowl, with one or two more throws from the QB, we win. Peyton Manning makes those plays. Your attitude can only be explained in two ways: 1) you think Peyton Manning is no better, or perhaps worse than Smith; 2) you think this team is so dysfunctional that adding perhaps the best QB in the history of the game wouldn't make a difference. I we're going to discuss attitudes that are "beyond stupid," this pretty much sums it up.

Now, to address your statement, the front office is thinking that Manning, if anywhere near healthy, is a huge upgrade over Alex Smith. Smith had a good season. It wasn't close to what Manning offers. However, there is no indication that they would add Manning and call it a day. They have had contact with a couple OGs and virtually every WR who is still available. They have kept the D entirely intact.

And yet again, you seem to be persistently forgetting about a little thing called the draft. Peyton Manning turned undrafted rookie Blair White into a guy who posted 355 yards and 5 TDs. Not great numbers, but pretty darn good for a fourth WR and fifth receiver. Austin Collie, a late-4th round pick, put up 676 yards and 7 TDs as a rookie. A rookie receiver with Manning at QB is, frankly, comparable to a third- or fourth-year player with Smith at QB. The same goes at OL, where Manning has the knowledge and ability to avoid sacks that Smith cannot.

Oh, and we have another QB in Tolzien, and there is no reason to believe that we would stand pat at QB. Hell, it's not even a given that Smith would depart even if we added Manning.

Peyton Manning

I think if Manning signed with the Niners it would be like playing in the AFC South, we have the Rams led by Jeff Fisher who will play the same type of denfese he played while coaching the Titans. They say he wants to be in the AFC because of his brother and that he's familiar with the AFC but dont let that be the reason, its not like the Giants go to the playoffs every year, before this year they havent been in about 2 years. I would sign with SF and get that superbowl.
The Colts are replacing him with a guy who Jim Harbaugh create now he can team with the creator (Jim Harbaugh) and play for a guy that he replaced. That storyline would run so deep about 14 years.

i never said smith bears no responsibility, but at some point there needs to be talent around a qb. and after injuries we had none at wr. when pass rushers come clean at a qb and gore whiffs on a block, that could end manning's career. same thing happened with young and he wasn't exactly an easy qb to sack either.

bringing in manning to throw to bad players like crabtree isn't gonna do fuck all for us. watch how much lloyd gets, i doubt it'll be much more if it is more than crabtree's cap number.

to summarize my thoughts. bringing in manning (assuming he isn't damaged goods) isn't addressing the weakest links on offense. we would have a 2-3 year window and wasting it on the complete crap we have at certain positions isn't gonna get things done. getting manning means making a push for the super bowl. having a washed up soft wr and a guy who can't run routes or catch the ball isn't gonna get it done.

it's like giving a surgeon a butter knife.

If it isn't a dollar decision, then how are the 49ers not in the lead?
