Yes I think it has no influence on his signing because Manning was not a 49er I don't know how else to tell you that.

I think that Moss was looking for a contract with a contender. We did go to the NFC Championship game last season WITH Smith. So to answer your question yes I do.

No I don't think his name came up. Why would it? He's not a 49er, and it wasn't for sure that he would be.

I think he knew about our interest in Manning but I do agree it wasn't his reason for signing with us or he was taking a huge gamble since we had no idea if Manning was going to be an option.

There was a tweet from a Dolphins beat writer which was:
Erickson ‏ @49erholics RT @OmarKelly IF Randy Moss is RIGHT the 49ers are going 2 B scary & Im hearing they arent done either on offense. Its hold your nose nasty

Which makes sense now if you factor in everything that's happened recently.

Also you have to consider that we signed Moss late Monday so there is a chance the topic of Manning came up because Harbaugh and Roman were going to see Manning the very next day. So it could've been a case of Harbaugh saying "Welcome aboard Randy but I gotta go since I've got a flight to go seen Peyton Manning tomorrow just don't tell anyone."

You know that was part of the conversation that they had with Moss. I am not saying that it swayed Moss but he knew what the 49ers were doing.

I think it's fair that he MIGHT have knew that they were interested but not for certain.

And like you said I certainly don't think its what swayed him.

I honestly don't think he's in competition with Eli for rings as much as the media would have us believe. I just get the feeling that our involvement is completely exaggerated.

Jim Harbaugh threw with him. He and Roman flew all the way out to Duram to watch Manning throw. They sent a doctor to go give him a physical.

If our involvement is exaggerated then so is everyone elses.

Now I still think we're a distant third for Manning, but we're definitely in it.

Yes but Alex had a contract on the table and was then and still completely expected that accept the contract and be in our jersey next season.

Once again why would they say that when Manning isn't a member on our team and the chances of hiim being here were slim? That is not even close to being a good selling point, I'm sorry.

If you're Randy Moss you don't sign a contract without finding out their plans at QB. With them going out to Manning the very next day I find it hard to believe Moss didn't know anything.

Why would our chances be slim if we just went to the NFC championship? Wouldn't Manning want to go to a winner? Our chances look good, actually. It's probably down to us and Tennessee right now. So, everything you read about us going with Smith and forget about manning, you can throw out the window.

Why a distant third? I admit I haven't read through this entire thread but I believe that there is going to be a press conference at 4949 Centennial Blvd on Tuesday.

From the chatter I've been reading the Broncos feel their chances have dropped in signing him so I think they are the distant 3rd now.

Broncos are the worst team of the 3 and Denver doesn't have the edge in location like Tennessee does so it makes sense they would be 3rd now.

If I had to guess I'm sure what he's thinking is:

"Do I go for the best chances of winning at the expense of family comfort"

OR

"Do I go for the lower odds of winning for the sake of family comfort"

So I would imagine 9ers and Titans are playing tug of war with his thought process right now.

Neither was Smith. You don't think they discussed the QB situation at all and what the plans were? Which might of included "oh, by the way we're going to NC tomorrow to work out Peyton Manning."

Smith was a Niner. The workout and the signing were on Monday. Free Agency started Tuesday. Everyone was convinced that Smith would be signing at any point.

I think Peyton had already decided. He knows where he going.

Peyton wasn't restricted by the Tuesday start of free agency. Smith was not a Niner.... he was and is a free agent.

I just don't see this happening...Harbaugh's loyalty to Smith is strong, Manning is nothing more than a 2-3 year solution and CK is completely unproven and developing.

I think the 49ers showed their interest to nudge AZ off of the short list. However, of all the teams the 49ers make the most sense for him. He doesn't need money, doesn't want to end his career with a below average team, and the 49er offense offers him some physical protection by the running game...but I'm sure the pass protection is something he will think hard on...The connection with Tennessee may be nostalgic for him, but he's looking for more than what they offer this year and over the next few...

As much as it hurts you, that's obviously not true. If Harbaugh's loyalty to Smith is as strong as you claim, he wouldn't have flown all the way to Duram to throw with Peyton.

And really, Peyton Manning is just a 2-3 year solution? WTF does that make Alex?

I don't think our involvement is so much exaggerated as Manning's interest to come here. He worked out with a lot of people, and yeah it makes sense for any big time QB to want to come here but I'll have to see more to believe it.

I do agree that we are a distant 3rd.

Although apparently it'll make some people on this board cry to see Alex go, I fucking hope you're right.

Why would us recruiting Manning make Moss decide to come here? Esecially since there were 11 other teams recruiting him at the time and rumors were that he was going elsewhere? It wasn't what swayed Moss to come here.

Our chances are slim because we aren't offering ownership of the team and lifetime contract. We're not in the south and his wife isn't from the Bay area. Those are all MAJOR issues that work against us.

Even when the news broke they said that we were a longshot. I feel like you are talking yourself into believing that he's coming here.

Isn't speculation kind of pointless here? Its an unusual situation to say the least. I think the fact that you haven't heard a single peep about Smith/Condon talking to other teams is kind of weird......if there is a solid chance Manning is coming here, they would have been working diligently to land Smith another spot. And while obviously things are being handled with great secrecy and tact, I think we would have heard some rumblings somewhere at some point about teams talking to him.

On the other hand, I doubt the Niners interest in Manning is phony. Its hard to believe Smith would be loyal enough to let that entire situation play out before seeking a destination, and I don't think the Niners would have hung him out to dry by dragging their feet on negotiations while they secretly waited on Manning. Condon would sniff that out anyway. Impossible to understand what's going on.

But you can't say it's been exaggerated. The media didn't even know we were involved until yesterday. No one has any real idea how much we're involved, but I doubt it stops at what the media has been able to report.

I think Peyton had already decided. He knows where he going.

I don't think he's decided but I think he does have a team he's leaning towards.

I think he's going to take the weekend, review the pros and cons of each team, maybe make some phone calls, talk with the family, and make a final judgement off that.

Look I would love to see Manning lead us to the promise land as much as anyone. But I'm also realistic and realize that he's most likely going to the Titans.

I will watch how it plays out and hope that I'm wrong though.

Also...if we happen to win a Superbowl or two in those years then isn't it worth it?? I look at him as more of the, "we have a Superbowl caliber defense right now so let's do everything we can to get over that hump while the window is still open" sort of guy.
