Yeah, when he found out we were going after Manning. Would you choose Alex Smith over Brees? Also, don't forget he might have been the one who contacted the Niners.

Wait wait. So are you honestly saying that Moss chose the 49ers over the Saints because he heard a rumor that there was a chance that we could sneak in and take Manning? That is absolutely absurd. He for a fact had Brees in NO, while here he would most likely be catching passes from Smith.

We're just getting crazy now with the crack pot theories.

this is what makes me hopeful and curious to find out whats true and whats just a rumor.

If he really contacted the niners he must have really thought about what we bring to the table.
A focused Randy Moss, a tight end thats faster or just as fast as most WRs, and a OL and RB who can pound the rock. I dont think Denver or Tenn. can match that offensively. We wont even mention the Defense, even though Denver's defense did start to bring it toward the end of the season and during the playoffs

Not much sense in freaking out too much about this. It will play out in its own time. I do think Barrows raised some good points about why the Niners' approach might appeal to Manning, though. And other than the money - which we could find ways to match anyway - we're every bit as attractive as the Broncos. Probably more so. Tennessee has the roots (speaking from experience, I would hesitate to discount his wife's preferences or desire to be closer to family...) and the part-owner thing going for it. But we've got a very real chance of getting him into the super bowl next year. Should be an interesting couple days.

I agree, I don't want to make it seem like he needs the money or that I believe him to go to Tennessee for reasons other then money. He could hide behind the whole college experience thing and his wife being from Tennessee but its all bullshit. His wife hasn't lived in Tennessee as long as they have been together, what's another 3 yrs?!?

I agree with you. The media has been a step behind in this whole process. Nobody really knows what is going to happen.

All I can say is PM didn't sign with the cards because Eli showed him this photo.

It's not a rumor if it's coming out of Harbaugh's mouth. Just because we didn't report every move we were doing doesn't mean we're sneaking in late to grab him. We've been talking with him since Tuesday.

I'm not discounting, merely bringing to light that Peyton's career is nearly over and it is a reasonable assumption based on the fact that they have not lived in Tennessee during his career thus far that the Manning family is suddenly adamant about living close to home. If I told my fiancé, my work will take us to San Francisco for three years then I can retire and we can live ANYWHERE YOU WANT, I'm pretty sure she would be more then down. But maybe that's just me.

yep, there would be many factors to consider and hence not an easy decision.

if i'm Peyton the biggest factor is how would I fit in? would i project success running that offensive scheme? don't want to set myself up to 'fail'. this doesn't mean obtain big passing stats, but to execute the offense best it can.

next is giving myself a good chance to WIN a SB now? nothing to do with Eli or whomever, but for me. yes, the 49ers are clearly in the lead here.

No you completely skipped the question. Are you honestly saying that Moss chose the 49ers because he may or may not have been told that we were recruiting Manning? Knowing that the Saints already have Brees and a WR friendly offense, also knowing that we most likely would end up with Alex Smith.

Lets keep in mind that you also have no proof that Moss had any idea about the Manning situation.

That is completely absurd, I'm sorry.

I just don't see this happening...Harbaugh's loyalty to Smith is strong, Manning is nothing more than a 2-3 year solution and CK is completely unproven and developing.

I think the 49ers showed their interest to nudge AZ off of the short list. However, of all the teams the 49ers make the most sense for him. He doesn't need money, doesn't want to end his career with a below average team, and the 49er offense offers him some physical protection by the running game...but I'm sure the pass protection is something he will think hard on...The connection with Tennessee may be nostalgic for him, but he's looking for more than what they offer this year and over the next few...

Except for the fact the media reporting that we're sticking with Alex Smith was false. We were working out Manning as they were writing those articles. You think Harbaugh telling Moss that we are going after Manning had no influence in him signing? Fair enough. Do you think he would've signed a contract with no guaranteed money if Harbaugh told him we're sticking with Smith? Doubt it. We worked out Manning the very next day after we worked out Moss. You don't think Harbaugh brought up Manning's name at all to Moss?

The media has said we are a finalist but he's spent most of his time with other teams, actions speak louder than words IMO.

There have also been rumors that we aren't even in the running and that it is between the Titans and Broncos, who knows which rumors to believe. It's easy to believe the ones that are more favorable to your team but you have to look at all the evidence.

We met with him on Tuesday and probably Wednesday. We just don't know for how long as nobody knows or has reported it. So he might've spent just as much time with us as other teams. The only difference is we didn't shout from the rooftops that we were meeting with Peyton and were all about the Football side of things. Which is why you have speculation that this approach could be appealing to Peyton since it shows we're interested in Peyton for his ability to help us win a championship and not for marketing or anything else.

Also if the speculation is true it's possible Peyton came to us and not us to him. If that's the case we didn't need to bring him in and sell him on the benefits of playing for us since he already knew what the benefits were and that's simply the best chance for another Super Bowl title.

So I wouldn't take not bringing him to Santa Clara and having a 6 hour chat as an indication that there isn't strong and serious interest on both sides.

The simple fact is we're finalists in this because if we weren't he would've already told the 49ers they were out of it like he did the Cards and Dolphins. So I don't buy reports we're out of the running until I hear from multiple credible sources and not Shannon Sharpe running his mouth.

Like I said it wouldn't be a huge shock for him to go to Tennessee as their are a lot of pros for him to go there but it wouldn't be shocking to me with everything we know up to this point if he goes with SF.

I posted this^^^^^^^ on 1/24/1012.

I got one reply that said...."then your opinion is not worth much"

HOW YA LIKE ME NOW???? Oh yeah, I'm just a troll that doesn't know shit.

Do you want a medal or something?? You said something that I hear a few times every day. Make sure you go out of your way to let everybody know the next time you are wrong about something.

We're considered a finalist and the only thing we have to offer him is a chance at a ring.

Is there anything else?? If he is as big a competitor as they say he is, that is all that should matter. Going to Tennessee and and making the Playoffs one time out of the next three years gets him a nice comfy seat behind all the legends. Going to a team like the Niners and winning another Superbowl (maybe 2) puts him back in talks as one of the best ever. That kind of stuff matters to elite athletes.

Yeah. I'm more worried about Tennessee than Denver. They're giving him a lot of power and it's where he went to college.

I firmly believe Harbaugh is a complete fan of Smith's and what he says about him isn't lip service but his only loyalty is to winning and he'll go with whatever gives him the best chance to win.

People are forgetting we traded up in the second round to get CK and we did go after Hasselbeck last offseason despite Harbaugh's faith in Smith. So it's not ride and die with Smith when it comes to Harbaugh.

I don't see Denver in this still because they can't really offer the chance to win like we do or all the extra perks Tennessee does.

Yes I think it has no influence on his signing because Manning was not a 49er I don't know how else to tell you that.

I think that Moss was looking for a contract with a contender. We did go to the NFC Championship game last season WITH Smith. So to answer your question yes I do.

No I don't think his name came up. Why would it? He's not a 49er, and it wasn't for sure that he would be.

I agree which is why I think we're right in the mix of things but it's not like Tennessee is a terrible team so he might feel that they could improve enough to be a legit Super Bowl contender within his playing window. So he could have his cake and eat it too.

Also we don't know his personal life and how much say his wife and family have in things or how important their say is.

I think it's extremely important to him to win more rings and cement his legacy but he already has that one ring so at the very least he can live without having that dreaded "Never won the big one" title hanging over his head the rest of his life. If he didn't have that ring I think he would be packing up the family and heading to SF right now.

I think the fact that we are pursuing Manning has nothing to do with how much Harbaugh likes Smith. He might truly believe we can win it all with Smith but Manning is out there and he makes our chances MUCH better. Assuming he is even close to the old Manning.

I mean, Marcia Brady was perfectly content going to the dance with Charlie, but suddenly Doug Simpson asks her and Charlie gets set on the back burner.

Neither was Smith. You don't think they discussed the QB situation at all and what the plans were? Which might of included "oh, by the way we're going to NC tomorrow to work out Peyton Manning."

Yes but Alex had a contract on the table and was then and still completely expected that accept the contract and be in our jersey next season.

Once again why would they say that when Manning isn't a member on our team and the chances of hiim being here were slim? That is not even close to being a good selling point, I'm sorry.

You just can't use a QB who you aren't likely to get as a selling point to attract FA's. Idc if they were planning on working him out or not. Lots of teams were planning to work him ou at the point.
