But you can't say it's been exaggerated. The media didn't even know we were involved until yesterday. No one has any real idea how much we're involved, but I doubt it stops at what the media has been able to report.

That is exactly why i think it is exaggerated. The media found out that we were involved and just ran with it like they always do.

If Manning had no real interest in the 49ers he would've ruled them out already like Seattle, Arizona, and Miami.

Our chances are slim because we aren't offering ownership of the team and lifetime contract. We're not in the south and his wife isn't from the Bay area. Those are all MAJOR issues that work against us.

Until I hear those words coming from Peyton's own mouth that is just a bunch of media fed garbage.

What did they run with? All what the media has reported is that we worked out Manning on Tuesday and sent a doctor on Wednesday, which makes us in fact the sleeper team.

What is being exaggerated?

Steve Young did some exaggerating by saying Manning will come here due to our talent. Which in turn gets people on this board all worked up as we've seen. I guess it has been more exaggerated by this board that the media.

Peyton wasn't restricted by the Tuesday start of free agency. Smith was not a Niner.... he was and is a free agent.

That's great. We're talking about who was on the roster when Moss worked out for us. Moss worked out Monday. Alex hit free agency Tuesday.

That's why Smith couldn't throw during Moss' workout actually.

I don't think our involvement is so much exaggerated as Manning's interest to come here. He worked out with a lot of people, and yeah it makes sense for any big time QB to want to come here but I'll have to see more to believe it.

I do agree that we are a distant 3rd.

He didn't work out for a lot of people. He worked out for 3 teams:SF, Denver and Tennessee.

My understanding is he had a day with each team where he worked out, and he spent a day in Tennessee and a day in Denver meeting with the organizations for physicals etc

He worked out for us on Tuesday and met with Harbaugh and Roman, then spent Wednesday with our team doctor getting a physical.

I would speculate he has spent about as much time with the Niners as he has with the Broncos and Titans. The Niners just haven't been talking to the media about it. Denver and Tennessee have spent 10 days talking to the media about their interest. That doesn't count as time Peyton spent with them.

I don't think he's decided but I think he does have a team he's leaning towards.

I think he's going to take the weekend, review the pros and cons of each team, maybe make some phone calls, talk with the family, and make a final judgement off that.

If thats the case then lets hope he calls Dungy.

NBC analyst Tony Dungy, Manning's head coach in Indianapolis from 2002-08, said earlier this month that the 49ers would be his first choice for his ex-quarterback and friend. "You put Peyton Manning in that offense," Dungy said, "and people are going to be scared to play them."

Why would us recruiting Manning make Moss decide to come here? Esecially since there were 11 other teams recruiting him at the time and rumors were that he was going elsewhere? It wasn't what swayed Moss to come here.

Even when the news broke they said that we were a longshot. I feel like you are talking yourself into believing that he's coming here.

It all depends on how much he wants another ring and it's that simple.

If another championship is the most important factor to him than there is no question we'll be forefront in his mind.

On paper with Manning on the roster we become heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl this season and for the next couple of years.

On paper Tennessee maybe gets the division but likely gets a wild card spot and has low odds of making and winning a Super Bowl. With smart drafting and player acquisitions it's possible they could make noise in 2013 and maybe a legit team in 2014.

On paper Denver likely gets the division based on the AFC West but has even lower odds than Tennessee does of making the Super Bowl. With smart moves they probably wouldn't be a force till 2014.

So the obvious choice we be us if your primary goal is the Super Bowl as the team is ready right now for it.

If the perks are going to play a big role in the decision than it's likely he winds up in Tennessee.

I think he was more saying that he should come here if he wants to win another Superbowl. I don't think he was saying that he is coming for sure. Like the talent here will ultimately win him over.

Steve Young said that he'll probably end up a 49er because we give him the best chance to win.

That's not an exaggeration. That's an opinion. Just like how you're saying he'll probably end up a Titan.

If Peyton retired right now his grand kids would be set for life. If it's about winning we have to be the heavy favorite. I feel like you're talking yourself out of the idea based on everything you've read, most of which has been dead wrong.

Also...if we happen to win a Superbowl or two in those years then isn't it worth it?? I look at him as more of the, "we have a Superbowl caliber defense right now so let's do everything we can to get over that hump while the window is still open" sort of guy.

It's ridiculous. The same people who are saying we shouldn't start Kap because we should make a push this year with Alex and this defense are saying we shouldn't give Manning a contract because he's "just" a 2-3 solution.

:rolleyes2:

If we assume that our interest in Peyton had something to do with Moss signing here, the reason seems pretty apparent. We had a workout scheduled with Manning for the day after our workout with Moss. At the time there were no other teams that had scheduled workouts with him. If you were going to speculate on who the leading candidate was in Manning's mind (not the media) you would probably lean towards a team that he was working out for. Not one of the 11 that he wouldn't even visit (I assume you go to 11 by including the Jets, Redskins and Seahawks).

Also, if the speculation based on the Jim Trotter comments is accurate (that Manning reached out to us) then if Harbaugh mentioned that to Moss, it would absolutely make us the front runner in Randy's mind. Imagine this conversation.

Moss: Well coach, I've really enjoyed working out with you today. I'd like to spend the night in town, see what the night life is like and sleep on things though. Can we talk again tomorrow?

Harbaugh: Sorry Randy, Peyton Manning called the other day and wants to work out for us and have a meeting. I have to fly to Durham, NC to meet with him. I won't be in town to talk to you tomorrow. We'd really like to have you on the team, but if we lose you because I'm going to check out Peyton, that's okay with me.

Randy: (What does he say here?)

I guess I am not following you. Under league rules No 49er could throw to Moss because the league year hadn't started yet. It kicked off on Tuesday.

Even if Jim wanted CK to throw to Moss it couldn't happen.

Which means when Moss worked out for us, Alex Smith was still under contract. So when Moss worked out, Smith was still the QB of the 49ers.

I imagine if we wanted to make a huge deal out of the Manning thing, we could have worked out Manning and Moss on the same day and had Peyton throw to Randy.

I am one of the people who is not sure if CK is ready yet, but I also know this... The ultimate solution in the NFL is to win the Superbowl. Manning gives us that chance and if it is only for the next 2-3 years... enjoy those 2-3 years. CK will be ready for sure by then to take over.

Also, do you want CK learning under Manning or Smith? Another no-brainer.

I'm a firm believer that a QB can only learn so much from the bench. At some point he'll have to actually play and develop his talent that way.

That's why I only want Kap to sit if we actually have a legitimate QB under center. Peyton Manning is a legitimate QB.

Makes sense. You can only learn from playing, right? Hopefully, if we get Manning, he can teach CK a few things about reading defenses.
