I honestly don't think he's in competition with Eli for rings as much as the media would have us believe. I just get the feeling that our involvement is completely exaggerated.

How so? We were the first to work him out, we're considered a finalist, and it was reported all three teams are working under the 5 year 90 million contract parameters. If anything he'll take less to go to a winner.

We're considered a finalist and the only thing we have to offer him is a chance at a ring.

I don't know or think he's in a competition with Eli for rings but I think winning another ring is extremely important to him or we wouldn't be on the radar or even a finalist in all of this.

Also consider if the rumor is true he contacted us and it wasn't us contacting or pursing him so I think we're a very viable option for him right now.

My guess is he's torn between choosing us and going with the highest odds to win a ring or taking all the perks that come with Tennessee and rolling the dice in winning the ring.

His dilemma is he's looking at best a 3 year window to win a ring and the 49ers are his best bet for maximizing that 3 year window where he'll still play at a high level. With us he'd make us a strong SB contender but with the Titans this season they're just in the playoff mix.

The South Bay has very nice areas to live in and Great weather!

I just don't feel like we will land him. I think the history with Tennessee is going to prevail. Unfortunate because if he truly wants to win like he is telling everybody, then the 49ers are the no brainier. Just don't feel like we will get him. But i am still praying

We had a crappy RG playing last year and nearly made the super bowl. That was with Smith, a guy who isn't exactly known for his quick decision-making and pocket presence. Manning is exceptional in both areas. Smith took more sacks last year than Manning did in his last three seasons combined, and that Indy OL was shaky the past few years.

And again, there is a draft, and lots of interior OL play in year one and play well. The fact that we let Snyder walk also tends to indicate that we have some faith in Kilgore.

Even if WR and OG are a concern, how are they more of a concern with Manning at QB than with Smith at QB? The only reason would be the neck issue, but doctors have cleared Manning to take hits, so the concern seems to be relatively low. It's not as if Smith has been a particularly sturdy player.

it's a concern no matter who the qb is

Yes, but far less of a concern with Manning at QB than with Smith at QB. Manning has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to raise the play of those around him. Smith has not. Manning has made a mediocre or even bad OL look pretty good. He has made fringe NFL players look like potential starters at WR. If we have Smith at QB, the question of supporting cast is huge. I Manning is at QB, we're looking like a pretty strong offense.

I don't think it's the history in Tennessee that will prevail, but rather Bud Adams' lifetime contract bullshit for a guy that may play 3 yrs for the organization. If he wants to win, then the Niners will be his choice. If he wants to secure his family financially in the future, the Titans will be his choice.

he made what $170 million already. I think his family is secure financially. If he wants more money no problem with that. I am all about getting whatever you can. But if you say you are about winning and trying to get another ring, you can't sign with Tennessee because that makes you look like a liar.

He's not some high school basketball player trying to decide if he should go to college or take a big payday and go play in the nba. He's a multi-millionaire, he's already beyond beyond financially secure in this life and his next 10. It's going to come down simply to where he wants to play - of course he's going to get paid like he's Peyton Manning too.

The media has said we are a finalist but he's spent most of his time with other teams, actions speak louder than words IMO.

There have also been rumors that we aren't even in the running and that it is between the Titans and Broncos, who knows which rumors to believe. It's easy to believe the ones that are more favorable to your team but you have to look at all the evidence.

The fact that we worked him out first honestly has nothing to do with where he will sign. The Saints were the first to work out Moss and he signed with us.

I was also reported that we aren't in consideration and it is a two horse race. Right now these are all rumors, I think the fact that he's been spending most of his time with the Broncos and Titans thus far speaks volumes.

I'll stay tuned but I won't believe it til I see some proof.

That is what I think. I think he signs with Tennessee.

I agree completely, but I really don't think there are any other reasons. The Tennessee connection doesn't make sense based on college loyalties. Hell, even the pro team was in Houston when Manning was growing up. Maybe his wife has a say but overall, players typically play for two reasons, money and 'ships. We will find out soon which appeals to Peyton more.

Randy Cross ‏ @randycrossFB

If this PM decision was just about FB it would be over and PM would be a 49er. No one else left is even close on the field.

I think if he signs with Tennessee he can say he went to college and his wife's family lives there. He will use that to help hide the fact that he signed for the most money he could get, rather than with the team that gives him best chance to win, like he said was important to him.

Oh come on you know better than that.

You're going by what's reported in the media when it should be pretty clear all his dealings until recently with the niners have been in stealth mode.

IF he wants another ring, the niners are closer than the other 2 teams. It's that simple.

Signing with the Niners does not mean he will be playing for peanuts but i understand you guys are talking about him maximizing his financial possibilities. He still would be shown the money but also have the quickest route to the dance. So, in SF he can appeal to both...

I agree, I don't want to make it seem like he needs the money or that I believe him to go to Tennessee for reasons other then money. He could hide behind the whole college experience thing and his wife being from Tennessee but its all bullshit. His wife hasn't lived in Tennessee as long as they have been together, what's another 3 yrs?!?

Yeah, when he found out we were going after Manning. Would you choose Alex Smith over Brees? Also, don't forget Manning might have been the one who contacted the Niners.

And what are you going by? Opinion and perception that he'll choose us because he can win a superbowl with us?
