I believe it was Gary Sheffield that criticized Ichiro years ago (he's an ass but he has somewhat of a point). All Ichiro did was slap singles (or at least a whole shit load, which was his job). Most of the best hitters in the league are expected to do more than simply get a hit. Example, a guy like Miguel Cabrera could probably get much closer to .400 if all he was trying to do was make contact and get a hit but instead he's trying to get an extra base hit, he's trying to drive in runs, he's swinging for the fences. So in that regard I think we already have people that could hit .400 that simply are doing more than padding their batting average.

With the emphasis on slugging, and pitching being good all across the leagues, will we ever see a .400+ hitter again?

We won't see anyone do it since Tony Gwynn would have done it in the strike year.

.394 but he was on a tear and would have ended up at probably .405

BA is soooo over-rated. OPS is a MUCH better stat that shows a hitters true contribution.

At the end of the day, a double is worth more than a single and a walk is worth about the same. BA ignores both of these facts, while OPS takes both into account (while granting a slight bonus for a single over a walk).

Ted Williams was the last to hit .400 for a season and he did it while slugging .735.

Side note: 1941, Williams' slash line: .406/.553/.735/1.287/235. He finished 2nd in MVP voting. Goes to show he wasn't very popular with the voters.

So what this would indicate is that defense has gotten way better? That fielders are getting to more balls that used to drop in for hits?

Cause I thought ERA's used to be lower, too

Defensive shifts have become so exaggerated, that it is unlikely to happen.

in 1941, did OBP or SLG even exist? I think the ONLY stats they looked at back then was BA, RBI and HR.

Also, Not defending or attacking the voters, but the Spanks did beat the Sox by 17 games that year, and Teddy was just a kid while DiMaggio was much more established.

Batting average is about as overrated as OPS

Personally, I think every facet of the game has gotten better.

They also looked at WAR back then.

Anyway, 1941 BA - HR - RBI

JD - .357 - 30 - 125
TW - .406 - 37 - 120

So, because DiMaggio was a more popular player for a better team, he got the MVP over the better playing Williams.

Obviously, you're right.

Like I said, I am not supporting the vote. But when player A plays for the 1st place team that finished 17 games ahead of the 2nd place team and is also a well-established star on the darling team for the country, I can see why he will receive a few additional votes over the kid on the "losing" team.

Miggy beat out Trout a few years ago for similar arguments. The Tigers were a playoff team while the Angels were not. Both had monster, historic seasons that were certainly MVP-worthy. The tie-breaker was that one of the players made a difference while the other did not.
