What? Only 94 posts on a game winning thread? You guys should be ashamed! Oops, I didn't contribute. Would have been over 96 posts for sure.

Poor job on the thread. Nice job on delivering the W. Well done!

The quality of those 94 posts was outstanding, however.

Good tone in taking back the series to set up the home opener. While on the good vibe, Sharks win torture style. :D

Maybe not the next Robb Nen, but Kevin Towers of the Padres saw Nathan as a future closer at the time. Probably why Towers always puts together great bulllpens where ever he goes. And many people loved Liriano's talent, but thought he'd never stay healthy enough to be much at the ML level - it was fp santagolo that put the kibosh on him, IIRC.

Include me in that group. At the time, I was pretty excited to be getting an All-Star catcher. The only qualm I had was giving up Bonser, who I thought would be a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter.

I couldn't really have been more wrong.

Anyone here with me in getting the feeling the Dodgers might be this year's Dbacks?

:(

Even though gp isn't close to sizing up other teams, they are playing and winning games. Anyone else worried?

Yeah ... a quick start breeds confidence ... and when you couple that with Kershaw, Billingsley, Kemp and Etheir it could get interesting .... I remember spending all of 2010 waiting for the Padres to just fold ..... sometimes things don't just workout the way you plan. Still think we're better .... but IMHO Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball at the moment ....

Also just saw where PTMFB has signed a 1 day deal with the Philth so he can retire with them ...... sad ... truly makes me sad ....

Yeah. I look at it more as a respect for the team that gave him his ML start, rather than disrespect to the Giants. I don't think you're saying that Pat is being disrespectful, but I look at the Giants' claim to PTMFB as the parent that adopts a foster kid that is 3 months from turning 18 and convinces him/her that finishing high school is a great idea. Luckily, we convinced him to take some classes at a JuCo, too (scout). Hopefully, he will go to a four-year school (hitting coach in the minors), and eventually, stay so loyal to the org that he gets a post-graduate degree (hitting coach at the big club) and takes care of his "parents" in their twilight years (Rings!). Let him honor his biological mother, no matter how loud, obnoxious and arrogant she may be.

Nah, it's a long season. Billingsley is not as good of pitcher as his start would suggest. If I had him in Fantasy Baseball, I'd trade him for all I could right now. Kershaw is legit as are Kemp and Ethier. Their lineup isn't scary at all except for the two mentioned above.

If our pitching comes around and acts/do as they are supposed to, the only team to worry about is the DBacks. If our pitching doesn't come around (which I don't foresee happening), then there's really no need to worry about the division at all, lol.

A lot of teams start out hot and then slowly fade. I think this will be the Doggy's fate. I just don't see enough talent on that team (save the 3 All-Stars).

All my humble opinion of course. I never saw the Pads or Giants of 2010 happening either. :heh:

Interesting analogy, but I think it is more like the Giants were the birth-parents, there was a switched-at-birth situation at the hospital, and the Phils raised him just fine. Then, late in life, Pat found his true parents and formed a loving relationship with them. He still has a bond with the parent s that raised him, but he is moving forward with his bio-folks.

That's the thing, some team is always the one nobody really sees coming. They look at what they did last year and say 'only 3 allstars'. But then young guys step up, some vet has a career year, etc. And voila, you have the 2011 Dbacks.

I'm just wondering if the Dogs are this year's version of the 'wow who woulda thunk?' team. If not them, who? KC? Toronto? Houston? Seattle?

DC. The main reason against them stepping up is their division. Atlanta and Miami should be tough.

Good choice. But Philly will win a few games still too, that whole division is ridiculously stacked.

It certainly is. You're right to assume that this year's "Cinderella" would be from the NL, too. The AL seems far too predictable. Even if certain teams don't make the playoffs, no one will be surprised by any five of Texas, Anaheim, Detroit, Boston, New York or Tampa Bay getting in. It would be strange to call the Twins a "whodathunkit team." The Pirates and Royals will be possibilities for the title every year because no one expects them to make the playoffs. Am I right to assume that a team has to make the playoffs to even be considered for "whodathunkit" status? Plenty of teams can make a mid-season run, but to be on par with the 2010 Giants and 2011 D-Backs (or even Cardinals), I think the squad has to be in the post-season. That is what slims the Nationals' chances... and hopefully, ruins the Dodgers, as well. This whole fifth playoff team thing has the ability to change that in the NL, though. I don't see the Twins, M's or Blue Jays sneaking in, but I guess that's why it's a "whodathunkit."

I always thought that people casted Nathan in the closer type role only because they thought his arm didn't have the strength to be a starter (that experiment was short lived)

In any case, my arguments were of the living room/bar stool variety with folks who claimed the Giants were dumb to make that trade.

The guy I wanted the Giants to keep was Boof. Although he was projected as a potential 2/3, I just dug the name.

And yes, every bullpen with a Kevin Towers stamp on it is legit.

But who would have picked the Nats way back during this convo.

Now THAT would have been impressive...

IIRC, tzill was pretty early pointing out how good the Nats were.

Whatever happened to filo anyway?

I saw that, but wasn't everyone predicting the Nationals to improve over last year? Now the A's or O's, THAT would have been impressive.
