Trading DK makes our receiving corps EXTREMELY thin and almost REQUIRES that we use either our 1st or 2nd on a receiver PLUS go for a 3rd receiver in FA.

Trading before June 1st makes the team VERY upside down cap wise with 21 million in dead money and only 10 million in savings.
If you use the pick you get from DK on a WR (let's say it's a 3rd), then that roster spot costs you substantially less this season even with the dead cap hit of $21M vs having to pay DK the $31M he's due. After this season, it's not even close. And my personal view is it's also a way better position to be in long term not to have to commit another big money deal to a WR when you are also looking at having to re-sign or extend JSN in 2 years from now.

If the stated identity of this team is going to be about running the ball and playing hard nosed defense, then paying a bunch of money to WRs doesn't make sense.

While a 3rd round drafted WR will certainly save us money, he also will not be nearly as good as DK. The overall talent level of the team is likely to go down. Now, sometimes you have to do this of course. Finances matter. But if all we can get is a day 3 pick then it's just not worth making that trade.

Running and defense. If that's the identity of this team, we just cannot fret about a short term dip in WR talent. It's an ends, ways, and means mismatch if we do.

I'm more concerned about overall talent. Giving up good players for weak return assets is not a winning strategy.

I am more concerned about where the talent is on the roster. You can have less overall talent but still be set up better to play the style of football you say you want to play. That's what trading DK can help this team do. Better roster/cap management. We've been over-leveraged at WR the past few years. Time for a course correction even if there is a short term bill to play. It's plain as day to me.

I think you just want to get rid of DK. Which is fine. Personally I think he stretches the defense and losing him without getting someone else who can offer a deep threat will make things tougher. Which is why I want to get a reasonably valuable asset in return.

I agree, getting rid of him for the sake of it is a mistake. Jsn is going to see his productivity collapse with dk to take attention away from him.

No, don't take it there. I am just looking at the 3 basic paths this is going to follow and I am resolute on which one I think is best for the team in the long run. If I just wanted to get rid of him, I would have had that same position last year and prior to giving him a 2nd contract. But I didn't.

Not suggesting that. But with as many teams are rumored to be interested, it's unlikely there won't be a deal out there that's "good enough" to pull the trigger.

And even if we get "only" a 2nd or 3rd, that's a lot more than we'll get when he walks as a free agent in a year.

Very debatable. DK missed 2 games this past year -- weeks 8 & 9. Week 8 was the complete turd of a game vs Buffalo where nobody did jack squat. In the other game DK was out (OT loss vs Rams), JSN had the best day of his career: 7 catches, 180 yds, 2 TDs. I know the predictable retort will be small sample size, but that doesn't change the fact we've seen a couple times where JSN was out there without DK, and the production didn't collapse. There is more evidence that JSN will roll along just fine than there is he'll be less effective.

We've talked about this already. Getting a 5th round pick for DK just doesn't make sense. Even a 3rd doesn't make a lot of sense, unless they have no choice.

Well we would most likely get a 3rd round compensatory pick for DK if he walked.

I would not jump for joy if we shipped him off for a 5th. I would also not jump for joy if we declined a 3rd, let him play out the final year, then got fuckall next off-season when he walks as a FA.

I guess it all depends on what else we did in free agency, right? Also, that comp pick wouldn't be until the 2027 draft. If you agree with the idea that you devalue a pick by a round a year, a 3rd in '27 is the rough equivalent of a 5th in '25.

Well Ernest Jones is undergoing knee surgery... ugh, here we go again. Now it doesn't mean it's anything like Lucas and I've read some sources are it's 'cleanup'... but still.

I would say if we sign him, make sure that contract is performance based... don't just give him some 5 year $70M/$40M guaranteed shit.
