I am OK with the DE from Boise St too. He can be that extra pass rusher. S from GA is not bad in Rd 7 either.

We wasted the last pick on a small WR who cant catch though.

My final thoughts on this draft. Holmes has a long history of picking players people view as reaches, and he has a long history of being correct. However, his biggest flaw happens in every draft. He will always at some point on late day 2, early day 3, give WAY too much future draft capital to make his biggest overreach. On those, he is always wrong. It is wasting future picks on massive projects. Let's run the list:

Broderick Martin
Colby Sorsdal
Giovani Manu
Isaac TeSlaa

These are his 2 worst picks and 2 extreme unknowns, all at the cost of future draft capital. That shit has to stop. Maybe Manu or TeSlaa becomes a mega star that makes it all worth it? He needs at least one to become a plus starter, or he needs to adjust his mid-draft game plans.

Also, I don't love going into the season relying on Davenport to be a healthy option the entire season.

Still the best GM for the Lions in my time as a fan, love the guy. I can take one frustrating trend for all of the positives that come from it.

I can only think of one pick that the bold applies to. Gibbs.

Of the many other picks Holmes has struck gold on, I don't think any were considered real reaches at the time.

The other real reaches were the ones you rightfully complained about.

Pascal, Gibbs, Campbell, Vaki, Barnes, Green, Houston, and Laporta all considered reaches when he took him.

Bah, Holmes gets more credit because we've been so bad for so long. But he hasn't been THAT great.

He hit on Hutchinson, but the other options were Thibodeaux, Derek Stingley and Sauce Gardner. Thibs hasn't been as good as Hutch, but not a bust either, and the other 2 are top 5 CB's in the league.

He hit big on LaPorta, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. I'll give credit for that.

But Jack Campbell hasn't been any sort of game changer you expect out of a first round LB. Gibbs has been great, but not significantly better than Montgomery who we brought in for cheap or some of the 2nd and 3rd round backs around the league. Arnold is a starter, but not some revelation. Jamo in his "breakout" third season finally wasn't suspended or hurt, although he tried to be with his illegal gun, and still only had 58 catches.

And these are the only guys worth mentioning. I can't think of a single day 3 pick that's done anything. Not that you expect them too, but if you're giving a guy draft God status, they need to have at least 1 big hit on their resume. I think Joseph is the only guy outside of the top 50 that has given any sort of meaningful contribution.

Edit. OK I forgot he was here for Sewell, Alim McNeil and St. Brown. That was a good draft. Amon Ra was a late round pick that hit, and Penei was a solid pick. Alim is one of like 5 second and 3rd round D line developmental guys they've drafted, and the only one to actually develop.

Holmes has been good. I'm certainly satisfied with what he's done here. I'm not trying to disagree with that. But I'm not ready to say, no matter what he's gonna be right, and we're wrong.
