Just for arguments sake.

1. We won't have to trade the farm to get a QB in the top 5 this year.

2. What's worse, missing on Haskins or passing on Tua and Herbert?

3. Are we going to spend more time operating on the Ron Rivera plan of fixing everything else and then "dropping the QB in?"

4. Dean gets hell for "rubberstamping" everything Ron does, yet some on this board are getting pushback for not "rubberstamping" moving forward with Howell.

5. Is it a hot take to contemplate drafting a QB with our first pick, when our 5th round QB is:

4-10
Leads the league in interceptions
Leads the league in pick6s
Leads the league in sacks taken
Leads the league in sack yards
Leads the league in batted balls
24th in passer ratings
22nd in QBR

I take no joy in poking holes in Sam Howell. I'm just tired losing. I really am hoping Sam turns things around over the next three weeks so we can plug and play Harrison Jr. along side McLaurin and Dotson.

i'll give this a shot....

2. IMO, all 3 would've failed

3. What happened in Houston has me on board to draft a QB at 4 "if" they choose to.
Granted, Stroud is good but i feel like that staff did well with no household names.
Why can't we be next?

5. I still believe a new regime wants their own QB and for that reason alone -- we may shockingly see Alt or Harrison jr passed on.
on the flip side McLaurin, Dotson and Harrison Jr may be too hard to pass on

6. I feel like those of us who have doubts on Sam....those doubts stem from Rivera hanging this kid out to dry, in addition to not believing in him in the first place, "i wouldve started him earlier if knew he was that good" WTH???

Gruden got stuck with RG3.
Rivera got stuck with Haskins
Does the new coach get his guy or role with Sam?

This would not hurt my feelings either.
Harrison Jr.
McLaurin
Dotson.....maybe even a JaTavion Sanders from Texas mixed in at TE?

My mistake, it in fact was the 49ers who replaced Smith with Colin Kaepernick. Funny thing is they weren't set back at all. I am interested in the theory behind such thinking so if you don’t mind sharing the whole "set back" if they get it wrong perspective, I would appreciate it.

My perspective... dysfunction and/or incompetence are the main culprits behind the whole "set back" thing.

If Dad will allow me to answer the Niners drafted Alex Smith in 2005. He did not play well for them and as a result their records for the next 5 seasons (half a decade) was 4-12, 7-9, 5-11, 7-9 and 8-8. They were also 6-10 in year 6 of the Alex Smith Experience.

It was not until later in his career that he turned into a decent starter. So no the KC example is not the same as SF early or Washington. In SF he was a decent starter later in his career but they knew he limited them so they went with Kap. Same thing happened in KC .

we didnt miss on KC we missed on RG3 , so missing on a qb sets the team back potentially 1/2 a decade . now i am thinking i am going to have a change of heart at qb and getting one . if we pick one in the top 4 and the new regime wants it then i think i should support it and go with sam as a BU which would solidify the position

Right missing on RG3 and not trading KC when we could have gotten a huge haul from the 49ers is a big reason why this team is set back. Also A. Smith having a career ending injury didn't help things either. If the new coach wants his QB in the draft, the new GM should give it to him.

as i said we should have built around KC and he is a top 20 career passer in history so that says it all . i said from day one that trading for CDC was a mistake and it was . i point blank said injury was in the cards and again i was right . i also said trading for wince day one was a mistake and i was right yet again . when we traded for RG3 i said it was a mistake to give up that many resources for one person and i was right yet again

if we draft a qb at 4 overall we better hit on it . the only guy i look at is daniels . none of the others are not in my wheel house . williams will quit on you and he is immature . maye is 50/50 , nix is avg , pennix is a walking acl tear

you can say that about any team if they dont hit on their QB in the draft in the top 5 never mind trading picks for. The QB injuries are making you right, Rg3 was supposed to be what Lamar Jackson is right now. KC didn't want to stay here after the low-ball offer, Allen should have realized that and made the trade with the 49ers. That put us back quite a bit on top of the career ending A. Smith injury. I don't think you forecasted a career ending injury for Smith. If Smith played and stood healthy, Haskins would have never been drafted. They would have built around Smith.,

I haven't done any scouting on the QB's yet in the draft.

you also said there was no way we could have traded KC and you were wrong on that one as Jay Gruden confirmed that we could have.

Gentlemen, I'm going to say this one more time and leave it at that. Drafting ANY player, especially a QB high and it doesn't work out, isn't setting your team back for half a decade. Incompetence and trying to make something work longer than necessary sets you back.
