I have said it from when the rumors started…imo it will depend on their success. I mean we get he loves NY and he loves it there but if this year they take a big step and so does Mobley it could persuade him to go the 1+1 route and try to win a championship. The other wrinkle is if NY had the space to sign him they could also be close to a contender so from that aspect no a huge dropoff. Only time will tell.
I should have just said ^ this….lol

100% agree.

None of that matters.

The moment he is extension eligible and doesn’t sign, the rumor mill will start churning.

Doesnt matter that he has a very good reason not to extend, even if he loves Ohio.

I personally would not be comfortable letting him hit unrestricted free agency.

But, he has millions of reasons to do that very thing.

Why won’t Donovan Mitchell sign an extension this offseason?

There is a wrinkle to the Designated Player Extension that is worth bringing up here. Designed as a tool to help teams retain their star players, the “DPE” is no longer an option for a player traded during their second contract. That means Mitchell, who was moved while on that second deal, cannot sign a “supermax” extension like Jaylen Brown just did.

That may seem like it makes it more likely for Mitchell to sign an extension this summer if he did want to stay in Cleveland, but he doesn’t get much of a benefit for doing so. He is the level of player who will sign a max contract even if he suffers a serious injury this season, so the extra security doesn’t benefit him. He can sign the same extension a year from now, or wait two years and hit unrestricted free agency.

The contract he can sign in unrestricted free agency will be the same as his extension, as if he opts out to hit free agency in 2025 he will be at nine years of service and eligible for a 30 percent maximum; his previous year’s salary is close enough that an extension would kick him up to his max.

The interesting wrinkle is that if Mitchell can hit free agency in 2026 he will have 10 years of service and be eligible for 35 percent of the cap. That could lead Mitchell to agree to a 1+1 extension next summer with the Cavs, tacking on another year with the team and allowing him to hit free agency in 2026. That could be the right middle ground for the two sides.
I've heard varying reports that he is already extension eligible but not sure if true. But at the very least I am confident if he has not been extended before the 24-25 season he'll be traded.

I just looked at the box score from the 2011 finals vs dallas to remind myself how lebron fucked them over that year. My god he put up nasty numbers

Should have been heat in 5

I been telling him this for weeks lol and his counter is how Donovan showing no signs of being unhappy/trying to leave.

As you said once he doesn't sign after bein ext eligible then all the rumors will start
what have you been telling me for weeks that would be counter to my never saying it's a lock he'll sign and if he does not agree to extend by next summer at the latest he will be moved?

I was simply pointing out his actions are not of someone who is looking to make an exit.....meaning it's certainly not the lock some think it is that he'll leave.

Yeah, the new CBA kinda fucked teams like the Cavs.

Donovan can get the same deal from any team with cap space.

I don’t know if he wants to leave or not.

But, I would not sleep well letting him become a UFA.

Cavs need to win to make his decision harder.

They have a good team.

They need to take another step.

No more 1st round wipeouts, which is unfair considering what a big step they took in the regular season.

But, all is fair in love and basketball.

They should beware of a team like Brooklyn lurking for his services.

NY is home.
Yeah that really makes no sense imo

Yeah, you are correct.

He can extend now up until Oct. 23, at which point the window closes until next July. Probably be more of a conversation then.

I don't see much chance at all of him going to NY as a FA. They'd have to pretty much punt on the next 2 seasons and do next to nothing to get better for that to happen (even lose some guys/salary). But, sure, we could deal him there if it's clear he's not staying.

Bc he was was 1A at the least and he averaged 17 ppg. People will always look at numbers. If the Spurs won and Timmy averaged that nobody would blink an eye. Plus the presentation and all just added more pressure. It was win a title or you are a failure. Unfair but he showed them wrong in the end

I don't think any Cavs' fan thinks he'll stay here long enough to end a season then be a FA.

I’m sure they would find a way to sign him if he said I want to go to NY. I’m not sure how but nowadays teams can be so creative I wouldn’t put it past them

The players didn’t read the fine print.

Small wrinkle in the take the max and demand a trade a year later phase.

Wont hurt guys like Dame who are already on the last big deals of their careers.

But, coming off a rookie max?

Might hurt a bit.

Both sides could make the case they want to see how things go before agreeing to/offering a max deal. But my guess is if he wanted one the Cavs would give it to him now (otherwise why deal for him?). Definitely could see him wanting to see how things play out, which is his right.

Yep but nasty numbers from him. Critical game 4 and he drops 8 while wade and bosh went for 56. Only 11 shots attempted? Nasty work

If he wins that title, i think a lot more people got him as their GOAT now.

Also that was a young spo who stuck with Bibby in the starting 5 over Chalmers way too long. The roster as a whole outside of the big 3 and chalmers was very nasty

Not even a Cavs thing.

No team wants to take that risk.

Besides being a lazy, cantankerous, sloth bitch…

Its the main reason I don’t want the Clippers to trade for Harden.

You can’t trust these guys to not change their minds once a buddy gets in their ears.

Harden can’t be extended.

Hell naw.

Absolutely. 5 titles-3 peat in Miami. More would have him at GOAT

Yeah, Lebron screwed the Heat over. lol

The Heat were D-Wades team and Lebron didn't want to step on his toes. So he kept deferring. That's when folks started talking about Lebron "disappearing" in the 4th quarter.

Maybe if D-Wade didn't wait until the off-season to get with Lebron, acknowledge that Lebron was the better player and should be option 1...the Heat would have won?

Nets, not Knicks.

They can have 55 mil in 24-25.

Mitchell does not seem to be wired like that but no doubt you can never be sure. I mean, how many times did Lillard say he'd never ask to be traded? I genuinely do think he likes his core teammates which should help matters so long as team shows improvement again.

Bosh was attempting more shots than him. If he wanted to defer, there was no need to defer to that level where you made yourself the 3rd option in the finals

I just think the moment was too big for him at the point in his career. He had attempted 22 shots per game in the 2nd round series vs Boston and 19 shots per game in the ECF vs Chicago to only attempt 15 per game in the finals is bad.

I think blaming Dwade for this is idiotic considering Lebron attempted 19 shots per game in the previous round and 22 per game vs Boston
