They were in the conference finals just 5 years ago. Since 15/16, they've had 4 of their 6 playoff runs ended by the Warriors and the Lakers (during lockdown). Lets not act like this team was floundering, they just weren't championship material (like 90%+ of the league).

Yep there's a very small % of the summer league who even makes the league. Those rosters are usually made up of 2-4 1st/2nd year guys then the rest are just people praying for a training camp invite somewhere

Are you confident that he can be the #1 on a true contender? To me, he needs to be a #2 at best, he's just not that guy. So the question becomes can you bring in a #1 to carry him to the finals, and that simply isn't an easy task in Portland (and why they instead spend big on guys like Grant).
I think they have two they can trade and if they remove protections on another pick they would be able to deal another.
