Of course it matters, but the Heat don't have it any more than other good teams.

Last night's victory could've flipped very easily. The Heat definitely stepped up where they didn't in game 1, but had to hold on for dear life at the end.

Randomness in sports outcomes (especially in short bursts like the playoffs) is underappreciated. That said, the NBA has few true upsets in the playoffs.

This play-in stuff is a bit of a constructed story though. Before the unnecessary play in tourney, the Heat were the 7 seed with a 3 game cushion. It's not like a 9 or 10 fought their way in; the Heat just had to go .500 in 2 additional (and IMO unnecessary) games. Can the gimmick.

Nope, the playin is awesome and adds intrigue to lots of teams at the end of the year from spots 5-12. And nothing is harmed by it.

It devalues the 82 game season. If you can't make the top 8 after 82 games, go fishing or golfing, your choice.

Those strained 4-1 and 4-2 victories over teams that snuck their way into the playoffs the past few years were just ripe with drama, lol.

Why not top 10 and 7-10 fight for 2 spots to see who goes fishing? What's the harm?

Nothing wrong with improvements. Everything new is a 'gimmick' until it's not (3 point line, dunking, 24 second clock...)

You have 82 games to make the playoffs. If you need 1 or 2 more to get in, devalues the 82 game regular season results. Those teams that are 9 and 10 could be who knows how many games behind in the standings. Same reason I hate the extra MLB wildcards.

Adding extra games to regular seasons that should be shortened if anything is just pure greed.

Yeah but youre already saying seasons should probably be shorter anyways. So whats the hurt in just having some games that are guaranteed to matter?

The full 82 game season isnt full devauled. The 7/8 seeds are rewarded in that they only have to go 1-1. And they get at least 1 of those games at home, 2 if they are the 7 seed. Theres still incentive.

TBH having 16 playoff teams in sports is pretty meh to begin with. So might as well allow two more teams to fight for that last spot and potentially earn it by playing good ball when it matters.

Was the play in addition needed? Nah. But it also isnt hurting anything by now being in place.
