And Houston picks up $6M of his $18M salary. A 5th and a 6th to get Cooks for $12M this season is a great deal
That's the news I was waiting for. I just went from kind of liking it to loving it. One year $12M or 2 years for $25M is much better.

Cooks is a good get for Dallas, talent wise. He gives them a great speed dimension to compliment Lamb. The risk with him is his long concussion history, which is frankly pretty troubling. He's one of those guys like Tua who would probably not even be playing anymore.

I don't get it. Looks to me like his last concussion was 3 1/2 years ago and the comparison to Tua and what happened to him last season seems bizarre. What am I missing

Doesn’t have to be defenseless on helmet to helmet
You have to actually make first contact with the helmet then. Jenkins contact comes first from the shoulder. The helmet/helmet isn’t a direct blow.

Not so sure about the shoulder first

So now Cowboys fans want to re-litigate this from a Super Bowl more than five years ago? It was not a penalty, NFL officials and other experts agreed, and here's why:

This does not occur during the catch, when receivers have more protection. This takes place well after the catch, when Cooks was running around with the football and clearly didn't sense Malcolm Jenkins coming on his backside. At that point he's considered a running back, and hitting him with a shoulder like that is 100% OK.

Spotrac currently shows Cooks having a guaranteed $12M contract in 2023 and a non-guaranteed $16M contract in 2024, with $500K available in game day roster bonuses in both years. I suspect this will be a 1 year rental. Cooks was a big play guy when he was with the Rams but his hands weren't great. Part of him leaving the Rams was his injury history. He's been healthy since he left but he'll always be 1 innocuous hit away from retirement.

Fair

But, most if not all are one play away. Cooks will stretch the field while Lamb plays a boatload of slot.

First off I didn’t post it so that’s a stupid opening. Second it’s the head to head I questioned Not the shoulder. Sheesh. I didn’t know the year of the hit but today it’s a penalty, no?

was also 8-120 in the Super Bowl with Goff. I didn’t remember that.

I’ve never been a huge Cooks fan and if he were a $20M per year cap hit id be against this move but at that salary it’s great for Dallas. Just fantastic IMO. He’s expected to be a #2/2A. We have our #1. If he replaces Schultz’s production and Gallup is better a year removed from his knee surgery it should work out great. Also if he can be a little bit of a field stretcher that is needed as well

I might take him as a FA at $12.5M. At $16.5M i'd pass. He has a year to prove himself to the Cowboys.

I suspect the Cowboys will move on from Cooks or a Gallup after this year or definitely after next. You can’t pay big $s to your #2 and #3 WRs for long in a cap world. Luckily they will see both every day and get a good feel for which is the better fit
