Rookie salaries aren't where they were pre 2010 CBA and thery're increasing at a lower rate than the salary cap. That should make 1st round picks increasingly more valuable.here's another article discussing Smith's remarks. For some reason, they choose to completely ignore the fact that a team would have to give up 2 #1 picks to sign Jackson. Presumably, that is a big deterrent for quite a few teams.
DeMaurice Smith accuses owners of “criminally gaming the game itself” by refusing to do guaranteed contracts
It’s been obvious ever since the ink dried on Deshaun Watson‘s five-year, fully-guaranteed contract that Lamar Jackson wants one. And Houston picks up $6M of his $18M salary. A 5th and a 6th to get Cooks for $12M this season is a great dealThink it’s done. 2023 5th and a 2024 6th
I get the similarity, but not really. They didn't want Cooper any more and he wasn't worth $40M for 2 years. He was 100% going to be cut if they weren't able to trade him. Cooks a little less for them at $31M over 2 years or even less if Hou takes on some of the 2023 cap hit. Also, they have a lot more flexibility under the cap this year than they did last year and especially after Zeke's salary portion of his cap hit clears on 6/1. Plus with Schultz likely gone a 3rd WR is much more of a need this year.Interesting that the trade value was essentially based on what the Cowboys got for Cooper last year. Guessing the Cowboys FO just wants a redo on that one.
