From Jeff Wilson:
Adrian Beltre and Michael Young weren’t in minor-league camp over the weekend for a Texas Rangers family reunion. They actually did some work.
One area of focus for Beltre was third base, where he played for all 21 seasons in a terrific career. The Hall of Fame awaits in two years.
The pupil? Andy Ibanez.
Young, a member of the Rangers Hall of Fame, also imparted some wisdom to Ibanez, who is the front-runner to be the Rangers’ third baseman April 8 when they open the 2022 season at Toronto.
Ibanez has played all over since turning pro, but his focus this spring has primarily been at third base.
Beltre is kind of a big deal over there.
"A lot of the talk with him was footwork, how to prepare before the ball gets him, to be prepared to which angles I'm going to be throwing the ball to which base,” Ibanez said. “He's been in the game for a long, long time. For somebody like him to be able to give me that type of information is invaluable.”
Young’s tip sounds simple enough — to keep an on the ball everywhere it goes — but already it has made Ibanez more alert when the ball is hit his way. It gets on him faster at third base, and he’s not always going to have the luxury of taking his time.
Manager Chris Woodward want Ibanez to work on handling balls with one hand as opposed to parking his body in front of grounders and having his throwing hand in there for protection.
Fielding with one hand gives a fielder the ability to adjust more easily and provides some margin for error.
Burke with a clean inning and 2 strikeouts
Smith and Duran are in the game now.
