"The team reportedly is very high on fifth-round pick Cameron McGrone, who should be good to go for next season. McGrone — 6-foot-1, 236 pounds — is a speedy, rangy linebacker who would represent more of a new-school type of player.

Even with him in the fold for 2022, it’s worth wondering if New England should target a linebacker such as Georgia’s Nakobe Dean in the draft, whether he falls to pick No. 21, or if the Patriots need to trade up a few spots to snag him."

Then there's the CFL path to the NFL...

6'2" @ 315 lbs.

Playing in New England will be a move south for him where the weather is warmer.

Buffalo should be a breeze once a year as well.

Bill has to make a decision on JC Jackson pretty quick. Below are the four options that Bill has. If he doesn'twant to pay him a trucklod of money then to tag him nd trde him is the best option. No one was willing to sign him and give up a 2nd rounder in 2021. Would they be willing to pay him $65M-$85M and give up a 2nd in 2022??

DM wants to play. He still a valuable asset, but Safety is not a position of "need". He definitely has the leadership and the football iq that is so valuable, even if he has lost a step. At that, his lost step he is still a top level safety.

So, offer him to play a reduced role/reduced pay to mentor younger players? 2 year contract @ $8 mil per?

Or let him walk?

Depends on what he wants. It all depends on the price.
His leadership has a dollar value but it is not unlimited.

Can't afford him at what he's been paid. If he wants more than $10M a year....hasta la vista, baby.

Can't argue with this:

Contracts Patriots Must Consider Cutting in 2022 Offseason

JOE TANSEY FEBRUARY 2, 202279

The New England Patriots spent the 2021 offseason improving their depth at the offensive skill positions.
The upcoming offseason could be vital to trimming the depth at wide receiver and tight end to give the team the best chance to challenge for the AFC East title.
N'Keal Harry has been one of the most disappointing first-round picks from the past few years, and the Patriots could be willing to cut ties with him one year before his contract expires.
New England could look to do the same with tight end Devin Asiasi, who does not have much use in the offense, with Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, last offseason's big-money signings, taking up most of the snaps at the position.
The Patriots must do their best to open up salary-cap space where they can because they have to try to re-sign a handful of key defensive players, including J.C. Jackson, Devin McCourty and Dont'a Hightower.

N'Keal Harry

N'Keal Harry has not lived up to expectations.
The 2019 first-round pick has 598 yards and four touchdowns in his three seasons with the Patriots. Harry was bypassed by free-agent signings Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor during the 2021 season, and he should be viewed as an expendable piece.
The wide receiver would cost the Patriots $2 million dead salary-cap money, which is only $1.2 million less than his projected cap number. It may seem like a small amount, but the Patriots should try to save money in any way possible because of the defensive free agents they have to attempt to sign.
Harry can't stick around for another season and contribute so little to the offense, so it would be wise of the Patriots to let him find a better situation than waste another season on their roster.

Devin Asiasi

2 OF 3

  1. hi-res-243dbbbdb8fe9e6eb4c9cd801c105368_crop_exact.jpg

    Stew Milne/Associated Press
Devin Asiasi was active for a single game in the 2021 season.
The second-year tight end played 12 offensive snaps in Week 10 and then sat for the rest of the campaign.
New England has no need for Asiasi on the roster while Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry are established as the top two tight ends on the depth chart.
The Patriots could find a more productive third tight end in the latter rounds of the 2022 NFL draft or on a cheap deal in free agency.
Asiasi has not done enough to get on the game-day roster in two years, and it would cost less than $1 million to cut him prior to the 2022 campaign.
A release makes sense for both parties since Asiasi's tenure in New England has been far from successful.

Joejuan Williams

3 OF 3

  1. hi-res-30cd9bfdc95d0ee5dccc00fcd4e8c835_crop_exact.jpg

    Stew Milne/Associated Press
Joejuan Williams has not caught on as much as the Patriots expected him to as a second-round pick in the 2019 draft.
Williams played more than 50 percent of the defensive snaps in three of his 12 appearances during the 2021 campaign.
The defensive back, like Harry and Asiasi, comes with a minimal salary-cap hit if he gets released. New England would save $1.4 million if it cut the 24-year-old before the final year of his rookie contract begins.
Again, that may not seem like a large sum of money, but every bit of cash helps if the Patriots want to be involved in the free-agent chase of some of their defensive stars.
Williams has made a one start in three seasons, and given he has not done much in that time, not a lot should be expected of him during his fourth year.

Statistics obtained from Pro Football Reference. Contract information obtained from Over the Cap.

Well here is my Pre Free agency, Pre Combine Initial mock draft. The write ups are not mine but I used them in part to make my decisions. I based this on what I feel are positions of need and tried to take best available at this position at that point in the draft. I did not do any trades this is a straight draft at allocated position.

21: Trevor Penning OT Northern Iowa;

His Write up ( Not My Write Up) Penning is a powerful blocker who can dominate lighter defenders at the point of attack. He has great upper-body torque and a ton of stored potential energy within his frame. The Northern Iowa OT brings good straight-line burst when moving to the second level, and he's exceptionally explosive out of his stance. When matching rushers along the edge, Penning is a fairly efficient mover. He flips his hips to match rushers around the edge and walls off the pocket.

On top of Penning's athletic traits, the Northern Iowa OT is also extremely strong. That's evidenced not only by his weight room numbers but also by his on-field play. Penning has imposing grip strength. He can latch onto players and wrestle them into submission.

54 Drake Jackson EDGE USC:

Two words immediately spring to mind to describe Jackson's abilities on the football field — athletic and versatile. Let's start with the latter. During his two-year tenure at USC, he lined up at both DE and OLB. Jackson proved equally adept at playing with his hand in the dirt or standing up. Although he will play OLB again this season, there's no reason to believe that he couldn't play either position in the NFL. That versatility is a valuable commodity at the next level, especially as more teams look to disguise their defensive formations.

85 Justyn Ross WR Clemson:

The most apparent attribute in Ross' favor as an NFL prospect is his size. At 6'4", he can be a dangerous target on the boundary or the back of the end zone. The Clemson WR combines his size with an impressive catch radius which helps him pluck the ball out of the air with remarkable ease.

Ross's size, catch radius, and physicality make him a nightmare for the opposition in contested-catch situations.

124 John Ridgeway DT Arkansas

Listed size is a question mark for Walker, but it's not for Arkansas' John Ridgeway. Ridgeway — a transfer from Illinois State — stands around 6'6", 320 pounds. He was productive with the Redbirds, and immediately fit in with his Razorback teammates in the SEC. The ease of his transition has been impressive, and it's something that magnifies his appeal.

With his size, Ridgeway has great length — early reports list his arms around 34 inches. That length allows Ridgeway to levy violent extensions against his opponents, and he has the strength to disengage as well. With a decent first step, Ridgeway can carry a great deal of momentum into his rushes, and his well-proportioned frame makes him tough to move in the run game.

174 Josh Cabe CB Alabama:

Standing at 6'1", 192 pounds, Jobe has a well-built frame and elite length. His use of that length is incredibly consumptive. That can be a problem at times, as we'll get into later. Nevertheless, Jobe's disruption potential is extremely high because of his wingspan.

Additionally, Jobe compounds his size with impressive athletic talent. The Alabama CB possesses terrific explosiveness, and he's also fairly fluid and brisk with his hip turns. Jobe has excellent hip fluidity for his size, which allows him to mirror receivers downfield and recover quickly from stemming at the line. Furthermore, his closing burst shows up at the catch point, where he's able to negate space quickly and make plays on the ball. He's also dangerous as a pass rusher.

Trevor Penning the Iowa OT sounds interesting. Ross the WR sounds like another Harry.....
Except for this and a few other things.

"which helps him pluck the ball out of the air with remarkable ease." And obvious indication the catches with his hands
