One play wonder, sure, but name any better play by a "one play wonder" ever... Not that I actually agree with that assessment. He did make a pro bowl then got a bit disillusioned by thinking somehow that BB would be the one who paid him. In the end, he got his money.

If BB says he can play then in BB I trust.
Imacculate Reception, Jules catch against ATL come to mind

One play wonder implies it's the only significant play of the players career. Pretty sure both Franco Harris and Jules Edelman had at least one more good play each.
True very true

Malcolm Butler and Leonard Fournette are both working out in Foxboro as I type.

  • Is Malcolm Butler a good cornerback? Pro Football Focus gave Butler a 71.6 overall grade for the 2020 season. He ranked as the No. 15 cornerback in the league, according to PFF, a jump from his No. 21 ranking in 2019.
I'm too lazy to look it up. But how much man coverage did Tenn play?

That is where Butler IMO suffers. I got tired of seeing his back chasing receiver after receiver.

Only a super friendly team contract would make me think twice about bringing him back.

Possibly but I REALLY hope they have some plan for a #1 CB because as far as I can tell we do not have one on the roster right now.
Don't need to overpay for a #1 shut down type. The front 7 can dramatically help the back 4.
I think BB is planning on going with more speed and pressure upfront with more zone then we're used to.

Solidies my thought by bringing in Butler for a looksey.

The reality of today's NFL is that there is no longer a front 7. It's the front 3 or 4 with LBs covering the short cut passes. Most teams have either 3 CB or 3 Safeties in coverage with the third in the slot. The back 4 is now the back 5.

I've been watching the Patriots 2021 wins for the past week. Joe juan Williams actually had some decent games as the slot corner, which surprised the hell out of me. The secondary was without is normal slot corner Johnathan Jones all year. I don't think Williams can move into a man coverage position downfield so there is still a huge need for a JC replacement. Odd isn't it? No one has stepped forward with a Brinks Truck for Stephon Gilmore. Think he might be interested in coming back for a vet minimum contract?

Gilmore may come back on the cheap. But he's not who he once was?

Maybe an incentive loaded contract that Malcolm REALLY wants to earn?
Any incentives would be listed as "not likely to be earned" because he did not play last year.
Base contract could be really cheap.
Anything more than 1 year would have to be voidable......

Bentley got 2 yrs/$9M

Bill has very little money to play with. He can't sign any of the top players because no one is willing to play cheap anymore. Even the Chiefs are starting to get nervous and paid JuJu Smith Shuster $10M to be the third or fourth target for Mahomes.

Don't expect to see any signings until the middle of next week, when the players remaining out there realize that the big money has been spent and finding a new home will be critical before teams start concentrating on the upcoming draft. He'll get a couple of guys on the cheap. Most likely an OL and an aging CB like Haden.

Then how do teams with LESS Cap space then the Patriots sign players? It can be gotten around and teams are doing it except for the Patriots. Hopefully what ever plan BB has works out but who knows

We are sitting on some cap space that has time left to be cut. Quite a bit actually.
Example: we can adjust Jonnu Smith contract and can afford to lose him if he won't budge.
There are some cuts coming that we do not have to cut yet. Ex: Joejuan Williams, N'Keal Harry, etc.
