They went out and got injury prone players in Brog and Gallo and now you think trading 3 key pieces to their Finals run is smart?

Brog and Gallo are going to have play bigger roles than what they were signed for.....they get hurt after that trade and they would be fucked.

Depends.

If you believe the Celtics core is good enough to win a title as is, then you stand pat.

Could they win a title?

Sure. But they would need a few more breaks than they got this year. I don’t see many people propping them as the best team in the East going into next year.

Most likely case is that they get close a few more times and never win. If Brad Stevens believes that to be true, then they pull the trigger and get KD.

It is a big gamble, but the type of gamble that can put them over the top.

That said, I also think they probably keep Smart.

They make the trade and this is what they would have.....

G-Brogdon
G-White
F-Tatum
F-KD
C-Horford

The bench?

Pritchard
Gallo
Hauser
R Williams
Kornet

Okay, not by todays standard.

But it was a first for a past prime vet and I think he only had 1 year on his contract.

Could be wrong on that.

They definitely paid a lot more than they ended up getting from Price. And it wasn’t like Price was the piece to put them over the top.

When that pick becomes Potapenko, the cost ends up minimal. The bigger cost is the lost opportunity with that #12 pick.

Include somebody else in the trade but by all means.....Boston would have to keep Smart.

Smart isn't close to what KD is.....a clear superstar but you can't give up Brown and Smart plus Grant Williams.....they went out and got depth because that was a weakness......does KD make the C's that much better without 3 key players?

Yes. Gallinari and Brogdon likely push Smart and Williams to 2nd team spots anyway. Are you going to hold two second teamers (albeit quality ones) more important than upgrading from Brown to Durant? The picks involved need to be considered as well of course. Certainly more reasonable than other Durant trade discussions.

Smart is getting pushed to the 2nd team by Brogdon.....what?

It certainly makes their depth less than stellar even with a huge KD upgrade.

Brogdon is injury prone. Horford is old. White was great but he would now slide into a starting role. Pritchard handles all backup PG duties. That bench is less than stellar even though their starting rotation is a huge upgrade.
I'm sure they could sign some minimum pieces after KD so overall you do it if you think Brown, Tatum and Smart don't have enough for you to win a title.

You don't think Brodgon is the starting PG?
Nope. I think they bring him off the bench.

Same with Gallo. If the roster stays as is.

Yep.

There aren't a whole lot of quality depth players available right now.

You don’t ever pass up on the opportunity to land a superstar over depth concerns.

Ever.

Injury? Chemistry? Price to acquire too steep?

All legit concerns.

Not depth though.

Depth is replaceable.

The huge disparity in height and reach is the only reason Lebron has a glimmer of a chance. Tyson is almost a foot shorter. Tyson's reach is 71", Lebron's is 84". As long as he's not hitting below the belt, Tyson would have to focus on body blows.
Reach in boxing is good and all, if you have the footwork to take advantage of it. Lebron in this case would not have that. Furthermore, Tyson could still likely land head shots, but body blows are extremely valuable as well, especially going into later rounds.
