Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet expects Rocky Thompson to join Tortorella’s staff in 2021-22. The Flyers brought in Brad Shaw to coach the defensemen and the penalty kill, but the bigger question mark was the power-play coach. The Blue Jackets ranked 29th in the league on the power play during Tortorella’s seven-year tenure. The Vancouver Canucks ranked 26th in his only season, and the Rangers ranked 28th with the man advantage during his five-year tenure.
Thompson famously made headlines in 2020 during his tenure with the Sharks after reportedly ripping off his shirt in a power-play meeting and challenging Evander Kane to a fight. He left the position in 2021 out of necessity because of health protocols. During his playing career, Thompson was a feared enforcer who racked up 117 penalty minutes (PIM) without recording a point in 25 career NHL games. However, he showed excellent knowledge of the evolution of the offensive game on TSN Radio when he began his tenure with the Sharks.

“A good quarterback on the power play creates space for the flanks. And if the flanks can get some space, you’re going to be able to generate some offense in various ways,” Thompson said.

His lengthy philosophy aligns with Fletcher’s emphasis on the need for skilled players to shoot from the flank areas on a successful power play in the modern NHL.

The winner for quote of the years goes to:

General manager Chuck Fletcher said the Flyers believe Deslauriers' physical, imposing game could open things up for their offensive forwards.

"There was a pretty aggressive market for him," Fletcher said. "Players like Nic Deslauriers are hard to find. He's a guy that we like, we think he moves feel, he forechecks well, he's a player that has a pretty good understanding of the defensive side of the game."

I was listening to this in the car and literally started laughing when he said 'hard to find'. 30% of the AHL is goons like Deslauriers. He probably could've thrown a rock from his desk chair and found 3 or 4 of them. Hard to find. Dude is utterly clueless.

The best part of the quote was "there was a pretty aggressive market for him" :L

He will fit right in Philly with the name Rocky.

These last few weeks reminds of the movie Bull Durham when Kevin Costner's character is teaching Tim Robbins on the cliches to say when interviewed during any streak. This Douchebag WTF Chuck is doing the same crap. When I read that the reason WTFC went after Deslauriers was because: "there was a pretty aggressive market for him." I literally said: "W-T-F Chuck, ya dumbass." " You are pulling this stuff out of your ass."
Just like Bull Durham. LOL!

Well written beat down.
I tried i really tried to give Fletcher a chance because of the impossible situation Hextall created and left for him but after this week he has got to go. Actually i am hoping there is some PA state law that says he can be arrested as i consider what he did to this team to be a criminal act. I believe he set us back another few years past the 3-5 we already needed if we made really good trades signings etc.:mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2:

Contracts wise - isn’t JvR the last one left from Hextall ? The devastation to the prospect pool and abysmal development will linger

We have not had a judicious use of cap money in nearly a decade with the Flyers that I had to remind myself what sensible teams do while slightly improving and progressing their franchise. Kuemper got his gig with the Caps (Six-year deal) and they turned around and signed his back-up. The good news for the Caps is the cap hit this year between both players is $6.35 million. Shit, we have one player that holds a cap hit of $7 million alone. One can only dream!

That’s what I meant by prospect pool - but cap-wise all but $7MM is on WTFC

The Broad Street Hockey Podcast, and Charlie O'Connor in particular, have it pegged pretty well. They don't budget. They want a guy like Deslauries on their bottom line, so they outbid the market and get him. Success.

Except now you're paying almost 2M on the cap to a guy that sucks at hockey. And they do that over and over again with midd or bottom of the lineup guys. Lindblom was the same way. Laughton. I'll even through Farabee and TK in there. Ristolainen and Sanheim probably fit the mold also. And then they turn around and lament not having any money to spend on high end talent.

The Flyers have 11 guys making between 4.6 and 7.7.

Tampa, the model franchise right now, has 2 (Sergachev/Cirelli at 4.8 for just 1 more year).

Get stars and pay them like stars. Get plugs and pay them like plugs.

Spot on as usual, awaz! The question that then begs to be asked is: Dating back to when Hextall ran this dog and pony show, why does the Flyers/Comcast mess keep thinking that "their guys" are the ones to go after in this "overspend-the-market" mentality??!!

Do they have an ounce of analysis in what they choose as excellent-to-good Flyers Hockey guys to go after and why do then think they have to overspend to get them when everyone else knows that these "Flyers Guys" are the bottom of the barrel??

I am just flabberghasted as to why this is still the modus operandi when previous jackasses have proven that if they do this shit they will end-up with no money and a roster full of premium Douchebags!!

I was sure Torts would change at least that shit but apparently he is full-on compliant with this mess just to get paid I suppose.

I would say that we essentially overpay half of our team by about $1 to $2 million per season, which leaves no room to sign the $9-12 million superstars that many other teams have. So, we have no McDavid, Panarin, Matthews, Marner, Kane, Toews, Kopitar, Eichel, Barkov, Gaudreau, Kucherov, Ovechkin, Point, Makar etc. Some teams obviously have two or three of those players, arguably even four or five (see Tampa).

I'm comfortable with what we're paying Couturier, Farabee, Laughton, Hart and Braun in addition to all of the young guys on entry level deals. Everyone else is overpaid or being paid for what they might do in the future.

The end result is we end up with a team full of mediocre players, a few stars that are not yet superstars (and may never be) and then a bunch of young guys that we can't grade yet.

I was about to post about this as I heard it on the radio this weekend. HTF does Nicolas Deslauriers get a M-NTC for 2 years. Top that off with an AVV $1,750,000 for 4 years. I guess WTFC thinks he can save face when we lose 6-1 because he can say, at least Deslauriers won another fight. The hope to get better within the next few years takes a major hit when this knucklehead is our 7th highest paid forward.
