Lets do this!
First time we lost consecutive games in over a month. Who would've believed that at the start of the season.
Because we are 8 points possibly 6 points (if we win the game in hand) out of a playoff spot. The biggest question is, why is Fletcher not been canned yet?
Why wait though. If that's the thinking about the playoffs then we're royally fucked! If the front office is thinking playoffs we're never going to be sellers at the deadline, only likely to miss the playoffs and be stuck with the same middle of the pack team for next year. Love the new compete factor but unfortunately it's going to set this team back farther. We would need more miracles then Jesus could pull off in the off season. So the big question is what is this front office doing for the betterment of this organization?Because we are 8 points possibly 6 points (if we win the game in hand) out of a playoff spot.
They will at least wait until seasons end.
Considering we were one of the worst teams in the league last year and we are fighting for a playoff spot this season it looks on paper like hes doing a good job. The team has made significant strides from one year to the next. I dont think they would fire him now being that our team has advanced considerably over last years team. Why wait though. The Sabres ,Wings, Panthers, Isles are all in a fight for the last playoff spot as well as we are so it really not a stretch. The stretch part for me is to think we might actually get that last spot in which i dont think we will make it so that could be considered a dangerous stretch part.I think "fighting for a playoff spot" is a bit of a dangerous stretch. Yes, 8 points is not a ton, and they do have a game in hand on the Caps. But they need to jump the Sabres (47gp), Panthers (50gp), Islanders (49gp), and Wings (46gp) in addition to the Pens (47gp) or Caps (50gp) to get in. With the 3-point games and 5 teams to jump, gambling sites (NHL Playoff Odds -MoneyPuck 2023 Playoff & Cup Odds) have the Flyers (49gp) chances at 2.8%.
Charlie O'Connor tweeted a couple times the past few days that Fletcher's seat got pretty hot during the 10 game losing streak in November. But it has cooled as the Flyers have strung together a nice run. I agree with his stance though, hiring/firing the GM should not be based on a couple weeks of results. That's kind of asinine. Either you think his plan is working / heading the right direction, or you don't. If it's the former, only the hockey gods can save us. If it's the latter, then why would you let Fletcher guide the team through the deadline? Get the new guy in and start on the next plan.

All of the insiders, fans ,board posters ,genius analytical minds were all in agreement at the beginning of the season that we would be one of the worst teams in the league if not the actual worst so to be fighting for a playoff spot half way through the season is not the time to fire the GM IMO and also IMO he lasts the season. However if they are planning on firing him at all during the season i agree they should do it before the deadline.
I agree that Torts is getting more out of this group than he should and am under no delusion that they will be cup contenders from the 8th spot. If you remember all my posts from last year and the year before is that it will be 5 more years to be in contention. I am STILL saying that it will be 5 more years even with moves ANY GM makes over the next few years. That's how far behind Hextall put us.That's a fair point regarding fighting for a spot vs actually getting it. I can agree with that.
I think you're exaggerating the second part a bit. They're a bit higher in the standings than people expected, but I don't think anyone said they'd be the actual worst. The Coyotes and Blackhawks put on one hell of a tank job. Worst after them maybe, but most of the stuff I read always had the caveat that those two teams had 31st and 32nd on lockdown without something dramatic happening. Enter the Blue Jackets and Ducks I guess lol.
Either way though, I don't see how ownership can look at what Fletcher has done and think he's got them on the path to cup contention. Theyre not going to go from 8th worst in league (and playing relatively well at the moment) to cup contender based on Torts squeezing more out of this group of players. You need that influx of talent and Fletcher has them cap tied and short on high impact prospects.
A major issue with having Torts is that the 'squeezing everything out of the players you have' method only works for so long. Which is why his hiring was an issue all along. I like him, don't get me wrong, and he is getting everything out of these guys and we are AT BEST an 8 seed? So.....no quality draft picks to choose from, still in relative cap hell, and when all that gets sorted (big IF) history has shown the players we do have will probably be sick and tired of playing for Torts in a few seasons.I agree that Torts is getting more out of this group than he should and am under no delusion that they will be cup contenders from the 8th spot. All i am saying now is we are going in the right direction and Fletcher IMO wont get fired this season because the team has gone from worst to a team contending for a playoff spot with 5 other teams half way through the year.
I do agree if they want to fire him at any time during the season he should go prior to the trade deadline.
Torts is older and wiser now so we cant say for sure that his methods will only last a couple of years and if it does last only 3 years it doesn't matter as we aren't winning the cup anyway in that time frame. We (on this board) for years have been complaining that our player development people didn't do their job and now we have Torts finally developing our young players so that's a huge plus for us in having Torts as coach.A major issue with having Torts is that the 'squeezing everything out of the players you have' method only works for so long. Fletcher should be fired, should have been over a year ago, but there is no indication this group is willing to do that at a reasonable time. They will choose to let him mess this thing up worse this deadline so the next guy gets another obstacle to overcome.
I would fully disagree with you on the idea that we are going in the right direction because of a string of results. The underlying issues with this organization are still there. The only way it gets sorted is a full on change of ownership. Clean house from the boys club in hockey ops senior consultant roles, business ops that only care about gritty and promoting theme nights, and get a crew in here that wants to invest in good hockey. I know this would be shocking to Valerie but you know what puts people in seats? Competitive hockey, a team that could actually compete for a cup.
It's just a big mess, and unfortunately us doing reasonably well it's hurting our future.Torts is older and wiser now so we cant say for sure that his methods will only last a couple of years and if it does last only 3 years it doesn't matter as we aren't winning the cup anyway in that time frame. If Fletcher is fired today I'm on board i am not pro Fletcher i am just saying with the advancement we have made this year with him as our GM they wont fire him until at the very least seasons end
Your last paragraph i am in 100% agreement with every word of that. The regime must change as we are going to be riding the middle of the road again with them still in charge.
It truly is hurting our future by being back to the middle but ill tell you one thing, It has been the most fun ive had watching a Flyers season in a long time. It's just a big mess, and unfortunately us doing reasonably well it's hurting our future.
Maybe, to early to tell but sounds like that kid could put up numbers in the right situation, Nieto is a husler and fill the void Aube Kuble left.Bacon i see your Avs found a nice trade partner in the SJ Sharks.
