I think Skip is full of shit.

I've heard that story several times over the years, including from guys that were in the locker room and every one of them has said that he said "Which one of y'all is finishing 2nd".

I'd think that if he had used the n-word, someone would have said something by now.

That was just another era. Bird is on record that he played with all the black players around growing up because they were good and they let him play with them at a young age. If anyone has a problem with him as a teenager he would have been dealt wirh. This is as stupid as it gets.

That also doesn’t mean he didn’t say it. Or wouldn’t have said it.

My best friend growing up was a white dude who identified closely with hip hop culture. He used the “as” ending of the N word all the time.

And I never once heard anybody check him on it because they accepted him.

I would imagine Bird carried enough street cred to pull that off in many circles.
