The New England Patriots’ initial 53-man roster for the 2020 season has been set, and the team will now begin to establish its first practice squad.

As of 12 p.m. ET Wednesday, the claiming deadline for players with less than four accrued seasons on their respective résumés has passed. Players that have been let go over the last two days are now subject to the waiver wire — including 21 now-former Patriots. All of them could, in theory be scooped up by other clubs.

The Patriots can soon begin to add up to 16 previously released players to their practice squad as both a scout team for the regular season and as depth in case of injury. Given the new practice squad rules that allow teams to bring back up to six players regardless of their experience, all of the 21 players let go on Tuesday are now potential candidates to be added again.

In order to stay on top of all the moves New England will make over the next few hours, please make sure to bookmark and regularly revisit our up-to-the-minute tracker below.

The New England Patriots have claimed former Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry off of waivers, per the NFL transaction wire, in a move that’s very much on-brand for Bill Belichick.

Perry was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft and was converted to a skill position player. During his time in Miami, Perry played wide receiver, running back and also lined up as a wildcat quarterback.

But now after being waived by the Dolphins, Perry lands in New England, where Belichick is famous for trying to make the most out of players with unconventional skillsets -- as well as his love of Navy football.

Belichick’s father, Steve Belichick, was a legendary scout and assistant for Navy football for decades. Since then, Belichick has maintained a reputation for his fascination with Navy football and is routinely linked to their players when they hit the NFL.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots “heavily scouted” Perry back in the 2020 draft and likely would have pursued him as an undrafted free agent if the Dolphins had not picked him.

Perry was a prolific running quarterback during his time at Navy, which runs a triple-option offense that does not pass the ball much. In his rookie season, Perry played in 10 games, catching nine passes for 92 yards and a touchdown while also rushing the ball three times for five yards.

The 5-foot-9, 186-pound Perry is on the small side for NFL receivers and will naturally draw comparisons to fellow QB-turned-WR Julian Edelman. However, Edelman was listed as an inch taller and heavier by 12 pounds.

It’s unclear how the Patriots envision using Perry. Although, Edelman’s path presents the likeliest scenario. Regardless, the interest appears to be there, though it could take the team some time to develop him as a skill position player at the NFL level.

This was what I was wainting for!
We could not pass up adding a player from Miami - just before the 1st game!
Proud tradition!

Patriots Add LB Jahlani Tavai To Practice Squad

September 1st, 2021 at 12:48pm CST by Zachary Links
The Patriots are expected to sign former Lions linebacker Jahlani Tavai to the practice squad (Twitter link via Field Yates of ESPN.com). Tavai, a former starter in Detroit, should be a quick study on Matt Patricia‘s playbook.
The Lions couldn’t find a trade for the former Round 2 pick ahead of Tuesday’s roster cutdown deadline, so they waived him. This marked yet another second-round miss for the Lions, who also waived running back Kerryon Johnson earlier this year.
Tavai, the No. 43 overall pick in 2019, started 16 games during his time in Detroit, including ten in 2020. Pro Football Focus graded the University of Hawaii product as one of the worst off-ball ‘backers in the league last season. Still, the Patriots are getting him on the cheap and there’s still ample room for him to grow.

  • Outside linebacker Tashawn Bower has been retained by New England on the practice squad, according to the Providence Journal’s Mark Daniels. The 26-year-old LSU product has been in the building since November 2019, and was called up from the practice squad to appear in seven games last season. Those games included three starts for Bower, who notched 11 tackles and a batted pass. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017.

As an aside:

No released Patriots player has been signed by another team as of 3:00 PM today

Yes. Give up 15 yard pass play. Give up 8 yard run. Give up 25 yard pass play. Give up 18 yard pass play. Give up 3 yard run. Give up TD on the ground or in the air. Doesn't matter.

Works every time.

Forgot about his bend but don't break (much) defense. "They may have scored, but damn did they work for it".

As soon as I write that no Pats players have signed anywhere else:

  • Cornerback Dee Virgin has agreed to join the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk 790. The Patriots had released the 27-year-old West Alabama product at the 53-man deadline after being signed in January. He played 82 snaps in the defensive backfield over the course of the preseason and also saw work at gunner.
