I think he would have scored enough that Dumars may not have pursued Rasheed which led to the title. Having Dark not work out led to the Pistons get a ring. They likely don't get it if the draft Memo.

Its a tough question and I agree that them having Melo prob means they don't add Sheed. Despite Melo being the historically better player by a fair margin Sheed was a perfect fit for Detroit.

Hey, he can contribute.

But I’m actually entertaining the idea that Garza could matter.

Favorite draft, of my life.

Could be a solid role player and he has looked good, but I wouldn't put too much trust in Summer league results. Most of those guys will playing in the G league, overseas, or working for UPS/Amazon this fall.

It's true though. If they picked anyone else at #2 they would have been getting enough production at the trade deadline they likely would have just rolled with their chances going into the playoffs. Being weak in the middle made them move on 'Sheed. No-one could have predicted how well he and Ben paired together on the defensive end. But look at their record down the stretch after the trade and especially the opponents scores. If Darko hadn't been a bust, or they draft anyone else they don't have the 2004 ring. It was worth it.

Drafting Melo, who was a 3 at the time, wouldn't really have made them stronger in the middle though. Plus, he would've kept them better longer.

I mean what would the TWolves give the Sixers for Simmons. Edwards? That really doesn't make sense.

Murray, Walker and picks for Simmons. Doesn't make sense either bc they value Simmons so high. They want a big fish like Lillard and that isn't happening. He will be a Sixer barring the Sixers management dropping down their asking price significantly.

I think this one will be a 3 or even 4 team type of trade. It seems that there isn’t a matchup with what the Sixers want back and the teams that desire Simmons and what they can offer.

You are right that he would not have made them stronger in the middle. He would have scored more than Tayshaun and won them a few more games, naking it less likely they go out to look for help at the trade deadline.

No he wouldn't have made them better longer. They had their run based on defense, especially rotation ane help which was solidifed with Rasheed. There is no way that Melo helps with this. In fact, it probably would have led to 'Cane's dream of the Pacers taking the East that year which would have meant another Lakers Title.----Now I see why all you Lakers fans think we should have taken Melo:D

I'm not thinking of Melo whatsoever, just trying to untangle the mental gymnastics you're enduring trying to support that Darko pick.

No reason they wouldn't have acquired Rasheed if Melo was there instead of Darko. In fact, they would've had an even bigger need in the front court.

It wasn't the need in the frontcourt per se, it was that they needed some kind of boost to get them over the top. If they had taken anyone but Darko the team would have been better off. Either Melo, Bosh, or Wade would have provided a lot more; enough that they would not have been in a position that they felt they needed to make a trade at the deadline to increase their chances in the East. It's not that I defend a Darko pick, it was just that it ended up being so bad that it forced them to do something and THAT ended up being good, better than anyone could have expected.

Ya'll should watch/listen to this interview if you have the time. It's the realest Draymond and KD have ever been imo. Great convo, discussed topics from the Warriors fumbling the situation with them, to KD's logic on wanting to actually leave the W's and KD's burner account, lol.

Great interview and gives great insight on a lot of things that were danced around in other interviews:

Little bit of a rewrite though to basically blame it on the organization. If I remember correctly, during their on court dust up, you can see Durant say "that's why I'm out". He's already decided he's leaving at that point. So it wasn't that fight or the organization's reaction to that fight that led him to leave. The friction was because they all knew KD wasn't sticking around

KD addresses that though. He never said he was going to stay with the Warriors, he just said that the organization handled it poorly which did further affect his decision to leave. He said earlier that his first year with the Warriors he was incredibly happy, but the 2nd year he said he lost a personal focus because he knew they could simply just win every day without needing to push himself. He would just need to do his role and they would win. Previous to that he said he didn't know if one day he might need to be a scorer, or a defender, or a facilitator, so it amplified his focus on his own game and what he needed to do. Basically in other words he was just coasting.

So both things can be true. Durant was planning on leaving anyways, but the Warriors organization also messed up in the way they handled that situation. And I'm a Curry stan for life, but this is a situation in which I think he should have stepped up and put his stamp on this.

Yeah I’m not watching a couple guys getting together after the fact to try to clean things up. We know what happened.
