With the Cincinnati Bengals releasing quarterback Andy Dalton on Thursday, the New England Patriots are showing interest in signing him, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Tyler Dragon. The Bengals are moving on to the 2020 No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Joe Burrow. New England, meanwhile, has an open competition for their starting job after the departure of Tom Brady in free agency.

The Patriots probably wouldn’t mind injecting Dalton into the competition for the right price. They have quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on the roster. New England also added Louisiana Tech’s J’Mar Smith and Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke, a pair of undrafted free agents. But Dalton’s experience — even if it showed he’s a limited quarterback — may prove valuable.

9 remaining free agents the Patriots could target to fill post-draft needs

The New England Patriots seem to have most of their starting roles filled ahead of the 2020 NFL season after selecting 10 players in this year’s draft. But they still have a few holes — or points of uncertainty — on their roster. And it wouldn’t hurt to bring in reliable veterans or players with upside to see if they can help increase the level of competition and, perhaps, the standard for performance during the season.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, there are no shortage of talented free agents on the market. It seems teams are taking their time before making an investment, particularly on a player whose medical information may be a necessary piece of information. (Physicals are not taking place during COVID-19.) So here’s a look at the talented players who may still interest New England on the free agency market. Keep in mind that the Patriots don’t have much cap space. They would need to free up space — whether by extending or trading players — to sign almost all of these players.



CAM NEWTON, QB — It's hard to look at the Patriots roster and not imagine what Newton could do with the group. His injury situation is concerning, but if New England can get him in for a physical this offseason, he will be worth a strong consideration, especially considering the minuscule contract Jameis Winston took with the Saints.


DELANIE WALKER, TE — The Patriots put together a nice combination of draft picks at tight end in 2020, but in the event the rookies don't develop quickly at the position, New England could add a veteran like Walker, who can be an immediate contributor.


VINNY CURRY, EDGE — It's a similar story with the Patriots and their defensive end/outside linebacker positions. New England added a pair of draft picks to add depth and, more likely, starting caliber players. But it wouldn't hurt to have a guy like Curry, a known entity.


EZEKIEL ANSAH, EDGE — Injuries derailed his career, and it's hard to see it getting back on track. But perhaps, when physicals can happen, the Patriots will find his medicals are good enough to take a risk.


MARCELL DAREUS, DT — He's still talented, even if his game is showing signs of age. He could help the Patriots as a depth option on the defensive line.


TAYLOR GABRIEL, WR — The Patriots options at receiver aren't necessarily bad. But they're not good either. Gabriel would be another able body to help elevate the level of competition in New England.


ALEC OGLETREE, LB — New England has Dont'a Hightower and Ja'Whaun Bentley running the inside linebacker position in New England. But they don't exactly have depth. Ogletree would be just that.


RYAN KALIL, C — In the even David Andrews can't go, the Patriots may want more options at the center position.


NICK FOLK, KICKER — The Patriots drafted kicker Justin Rhorwasser, but rookie kickers can be finicky. New England would be wise to invite a guy they trust in Folk, who was solid during the 2019 season.

Look at the dropoff from the first group of stats (which are basically Brian Hoyer numbers with 120 games of throwing to AJ Green added in) to the second and then slowly back away...

Depends on what the other additions are and what they’re getting for Thuney. With the draft in the books I’d much rather exhaust any number of other reasonable opportunities to create cap space before moving him.

I like your hypothesis of comparing the complete affect of the changing AD for BH. I was just pointing out the analysis was missing another dimension.

Dalton is 32 and just lost out on $17m. He may sign cheap, but I highly doubt it’ll be a full order of magnitude cheaper.

Jacksonville has cap space, no state sales tax, and his former OC. Even if the Pats make him an offer I’d think he’d have to feel amazing about his chances of beating out Stidham as compared to Minshew to come here

Where is Thuney going? Pats can't cut him because he would count $14M toward the cap. Trade? Wouldn't a trade make more sense before the draft. Dalton no longer has a team to trade with.

The point was AD would cost money the Pats don't have and something would have to give to get him. Thuney was used as an example.

Even if Dalton was willing to come to NE for $2M a year, he's certainly not a great choice to follow TB. I'd rather have Stidham and let him figure it out as the season progresses. Then have BB and Josh evaluate him and decide if his performance improved from Game 1 through 16 or if he was up and down and all over the place. If he made a small improvement every week then he's the future. Especially if he never made the same mistake twice all season.

If not, then BB has to start looking again.
