The Patriots pulled off their second reunion in as many weeks, signing linebacker Jamie Collins, a league source confirmed Wednesday.

Collins already is in Foxborough and is expected to participate in some on-field work Thursday as the team continues its voluntary offseason workout program.

The signing comes a week after veteran tight end Ben Watson agreed to return for a second tour of duty in New England.

The Patriots traded Collins to Cleveland for a third-round pick on Oct. 31 of the 2016 season, and the Browns gave him a four-year, $50 million contract in 2017. Collins, who will turn 30 in October, was cut after last season despite playing 91 percent of the defensive snaps for the Browns and registering 104 tackles and four sacks.

The athletic Collins was drafted in the second round in 2013 and developed into a high-impact player who earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2015.

According to NBC Sports Boston..............................

A huge contingent of Patriots players are working out daily at Gillette. Workouts are closed to the media and as of this morning it's all guess work.

>> On Thursday, approx. 7-8 players were seen entering the bubble with new LB Coach Jerod Mayo. Supposedly they went in about 12:30 pm and still had not come out at 6:00 pm. Included in the group were Jamie Collins, Elandon Roberts, Christian Sam, Ja'whaun Bentley, Carl Van Noy, Shaliqe Calhoun, Calvin Munson. Brandon King and Terez Hall were not mentioned.

What makes this critical is that players are working with coaches on their own. The competition for roster spots is already getting hot. When asked late last night what was going on, Mayo flat out said......"No Comment".

The other piece that is getting noticed is that Dontae Hightower was not with this group. These guys are all linebackers and this could be a little telling about the 3-4 defense rumor and that Dontae is switching to DE.

To be a misquito on the wall of the bubble.......

The only thing you'd gain longterm is the risk of being swatted. Everything is always changing with this team so anything you learned by being that moquito is likely to change either by game 1 or by playoff time.

NE or Det are the only places that would have made sense at this point in his career. He needs to be in that hybrid defense.

‘Wackjob’ Winovich a fit for New England

New England Patriots/Dwight Darian
University of Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown has a very simple way to describe his former star defensive end and now Patriots 2019 third-round draft pick Chase Winovich. And while such a description might sometimes carry negative connotations, Browns delivers it with nothing but love, admiration and appreciation.

“Wackjob,” Brown said last week of his former playmaking pupil’s style and personality.

Known for his long blonde hair and high motor, Winovich heads to New England after an impressive final season in Ann Arbor in which he started all 13 games while tallying 69 tackles, including 17 for a loss and five sacks. He earned Associated Press third-team All-American honors last fall, as well as All-Big Ten recognition over each of the last two years.

While the 6-3, 256-pound edge player obviously has plenty of physical skills that help him produce on the field – including impressive Combine workout numbers -- Winovich’s drive and determination clearly fuel every snap he plays.

“Complete wackjob,’ Brown emphasized again before explaining the description. “When he plays, he gets in the zone and he plays the game like a crazed dog, that’s for sure. He’s a little flamboyant off the field, not to the point where it’s distasteful or arrogant. He just has fun playing the game. After every tackle for a loss or sack I’d say, ‘Let’s see what he’s going to do now when he gets up?’ He’s going to be missed, that’s for sure.”

Brown oversaw Winovich’s transition from tight end to defensive end when he arrived at Michigan and even when the young edge player was behind 2017 Cowboys first-round pick Taco Charlton on the depth chart his potential was visible.

“Here’s the thing, from the day I started coaching him it was evident that he’s relentless. He plays the game the right way. Runs to the football like no other guy we had,” Brown recalls. “Excellent pass rusher. He wasn’t an overnight success. We had Taco in front of him. We were using Chase in package stuff, he was more of a stand-up ‘cheetah.’ He just played his tail off in that role. We were giving him time at defensive end to spell Taco, so in ‘17 was kind of his coming out party. The numbers were exciting. He really had an excellent year. It’s all triggered off his motor. The guy plays the game the right way. Last year he became a tactician. Uses his hands. Last year was his biggest improvements in the run game.”

After that breakout 2017 season in which he took over the defensive end job – notching 18 tackles for a loss, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries -- Winovich could have made the leap to the NFL. But Brown thinks the youngster made a “really good decision” to return to college and “committed himself as a great Michigan defender.”

Now he’ll have to make the same commitment to becoming a professional and specifically a Patriot. Brown, who sees similarities between Winovich and young Steelers Pro Bowl edge defender T.J. Watt, doesn’t see a problem with the transition to the NFL.

Brown envisions Winovich as more of a stand-up outside linebacker in the New England scheme, which means more playing time in space and dropping into coverage. It’s an area Winovich worked on leading up to the Combine and the Draft, one in which he already has shown great improvement.

“We never asked him to drop in coverage. I think he’s going to be asked to do that,” Brown said of the adjustments Winovich will need to make in the NFL. “He worked his tale off in that. When I saw him in our pro day, he exceeded my expectations of what he could do in that area. The guy is going to rush the passer, now. He’s going to rush the passer. You can always work on using your hands better. You take your toolbox and you try to fill it up. His pass rush will be better. There is still room there to get bigger, stronger, faster. Putting the weight on wasn’t easy, but he kept it on. There is still room there, though, to grow.”

Brown also knows Winovich will fit with the New England community, building on his past history of charity work that his coach doesn’t think he gets enough credit for.

“He’s a guy who really lent himself community wise. All those kinds of things kind of get overlooked, not by me, though,” Brown said. “The one thing that’s nice is he left his mark as an ex-player and did it the right way. He’s extremely well thought of. Those kinds of things go under the radar, I’m not sure why. But he’s a great person.”

That’s only part of the reason why Brown, who spent a big chunk of his coaching career working in New England at Dartmouth, Yale, Plymouth State, Brown, UMass, Northeastern, UConn and Boston College, sees the “wackjob” Winovich as a future favorite of the Foxborough faithful.

“People are going to love the way this guy plays the game,” Brown concluded. “I can see him being a four-team special teams guys. He’ll be a terror now. You won’t worry about mark, set go, he’s gonna go! He plays relentless with a great motor. He’s a never-give-up guy. They’re certainly going to fall in love with his work ethic.”

Saw a great piece on BST last night. A guy I've never heard of and apparently is long time analyst and critiquer of NFL teams made some very interesting comments.

"The defense of the NE Patriots in Super Bowl LIII was not a mirage." He went to say that the defense was literally a bunch of bricks in a messy pile in August and September. Belichick in his normal obsessive compulsive style took 14 weeks to place each brick in it's place, apply the exact amount of mortar and build an impenatrable, solid wall. His best point was that the defense never had the same 11 players on the field for three straight plays the entire year. The most that the same eleven were ever on the firld together was two plays in a row.

"The offense was a reflection of the greatest offensive line coach in NFL history." Dante Scarneccia is not only knowledgeable but has some type of magical ability to get into every lineman's mind and convince him that his opponent is not capable of stopping him from doing what he is required to do. DS had this OL convinced that Donal, Suh and Fowler were nothing more than high school second team players who did not have anything more than a media reputation and no skills.

A point that we've been discussing and I saw another show on NBC Sports Boston that discussed it, is the Patriots questionable wide receiver corps. This guy said that throughout his playing career, Tom Brady has been able to make average receivers a hundred times better than they were in college or with other teams. The only ones that he couldn't do it with were "stupid" or "obstinate". If any of the WRs on the roster now can understand how their routes are correctly done, Brady will make them look like an All-Pro. He thinks that Harry will will become the next Randy Moss only more powerful. He said that the only thing that will hold this kid back is if his ego gets larger than his head.

"I would not be at all surprised if the New England Patriots were 23 and 0.............August through February."

The guy that said this is of course a Boston media type, but I think these guys are as excited as the rest of us are about this team.

The funniest comment was............."We've got almost 3 months of insuffrable waiting for the first preseason game."

BREAKING NEWSSSSSSSSSSSS

Report: Julian Edelman, Patriots agree to two-year extension
ByTyler Sullivan 50 minutes ago

Julian Edelman and the New England Patriots are coming to terms on a multi-year contract extension that will keep the Super Bowl LIII MVP in Foxboro for the remainder of his career, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network adds that the deal is for two-years and has him with the Patriots through 2021.

This is a solid birthday gift for Edelman, who is set to turn 33-years old on Wednesday. Edelman has been with the Patriots for his entire career and was heading into the final year of his two-year, $11 million contract he signed back in 2017 and was set to earn just $2 million in base salary with a total cap hit of around $4.5 million.

With this deal, Edelman now has himself cemented in Foxboro for the next three seasons and ESPN's Mike Reiss reports that the receiver is seeing an $8 million signing bonus and $12 million in guaranteed money.

Edelman is entering the tenth year of his NFL career and has spent all of that with the Patriots.

With this new deal in hand, Edelman will now look to build off a very strong 2018 campaign where he finished the regular season with 74 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns in just twelve games played. In the playoffs, Edelman was a trusted option for Tom Brady, especially in Super Bowl LIII where he caught 10 of is 12 targets for 141 yards in the win.

While speaking to reporters after Edelman's MVP performance in Super Bowl LIII, Bill Belichick noted how the then-Kent State quarterback even got on his radar.

"I’ve got to give [sportswriter] Rick Gosselin credit on that one for getting us started," Bill Belichick said after Super Bowl LIII of how Edelman piqued the interest of the Patriots. "I talked to Rick — as you know, Rick followed the draft very closely — and at one point, he said to me, ‘A kid you might want to take a look at is this quarterback out of Kent State. I don’t think he can play quarterback, but I’ve heard he’s a pretty good player.’

“So we kind of got going on him a little bit, and we were like, OK, what would we do with Julian? Is he a receiver? Is he a punt returner? Is he a defensive back? Is he maybe a guy that just can play multiple positions in the kicking game? So we went out and worked him out — how many times did we work you out? Two? So we sent one coach up there. And then we were like, well alright, let’s send someone else up there, because we weren’t really sure what to do with him. So, as it turned out, he came to the Patriots [as a seventh-round draft pick in 2009] and caught passes, which he hadn’t done before; returned kicks, which he hadn’t done before; and played defense, which he hadn’t done before; in addition to cover kicks and all the other things in special teams.

“Nobody has worked harder in my career than Julian to develop his skills and his craft in a position — other than, I’d say, Steve Neal — other than Julian, because he really didn’t have any background in it. We put him on defense and put him against good players in the slot, and obviously, he’s excelled as a receiver for a player that had no real college background doing that."

Now, Edelman will continue to prove to be one of the biggest NFL Draft gems for the Patriots for the remainder of his career.
