I agree it's possible, but how many coaches are capable? Truth be told, I thought Shannon might be able to do it and that was far from the case.

Not many.

But Miami has tradition, tons of in state talent and a great market.

It is a very attractive job when it comes open.

So they will surely hit that elite coach at some point.

And if the coach had 8-10 years to turn it around he would....not the 3-4 they get nowadays. If not firing them after 2 seasons.

That's definitely a down stretch for OSU, but other top schools had gone longer and had worse seasons.

I definitely did not forget those years, I lived them. I was there during his tenure. By the end I was cheering for losses so he'd get canned.

But I was thinking more like Bama from 1997-2007 when I was talking about a down stretch, when they had win totals of 4, 3, 7, 4, 6, 6, 7

Or maybe USC from 1991-2001 with win totals mixed in of 3, 6, 8, 8, 6, 6, 8, 6, 5, 6. Only 1 season in that time with 9 wins, and none in double digits.

see the difference between those and OSU's half a decade where they had 8 wins in 3 of the 5 seasons, followed by 6 seasons of 62 wins?

And the point was (went over your head) he had 5 very mediocre years before he had what most would call a good one.

Eh.

I disagree.

The type of coach I am talking about does not need that long.

If the team still sucks 4 years later, you don’t have a special coach.

OSU flat out sucked before Meyer got there and turned them around....

You forgot the John Cooper years? LOL

1988=4-6

1989=8-4

1990=7-4

1991=8-4

1992=8-3

Took him 5 years till he managed to have a few good seasons in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 before he went back to being a 6-6/8-4 team.....Only won 10 games.....5 times in 13 seasons.

Give a coach at Miami 13 seasons and I guarantee that's enough traction for him to turn out a good product.The coaches at Miami don't get that amount of time to put out a winner.

You're high on crack.

After Jon 'the pooper scooper' Cooper was Jim Tressel. In 10 years he won 6 conference titles. 5 bowl games (one taken away by the NCAA, thanks Tat 5!). And a national title.

actually, the point was OSU did not have a down stretch even close to what some other blue bloods had seen, which was what I tried to explain to you.

You came back thinking they did and were educated.

You're welcome.

8-10 years? Are you kidding? If they are wallowing in mediocrity 4-5 years later and looking no better they need to tell the alumni, "no worries, we're halfway home"?

The idea he could not understand the difference between OSU's down period (which was half a decade and 3 of the seasons had 8 wins) compared to what Bama, USC and ND had gone through in their down years was mindboggling.

Then again, I had never discussed CFB with DJ. Now I know better.

did you go to OSU?

It was funny that he said the Buckeyes flat out sucked before Meyer. No I didn't go to Ohio State. I went to Akron U. How about you, did you go to Ohio State?

I did....from 1989-93. Not the best time for a football fan to be there. Sold my last Michigan ticket. After the usual drubbing, I at least had $100 in my pocket. Came in handy for a college kid.

Even found myself happy after bowl losses to Air Force and south Carolina hoping each would finally be when they wised up and let Coop go.

Funny story.....don't recall exact years, but there was an article written in The Lantern one year saying OSU would win the national title the next season. I wrote one in effect saying, "are you nuts?" Damn near ate my words (was hoping I would) as I think they went into the UM game undefeated.

Miami has been bad for several reasons besides coaching.
