Right....what are they gonna do? sit out and not get paid? I'm sure if OKC did not have a trade they liked and were not headed for a rebuild they'd have called his bluff.Exactly. OKC could have decided not to trade George then he would have to get over it as he wasn't eligible to opt out for another 2 season. You can only pout for so long when you have another 2 years at least with that team
To be fair, the situation the Cavs were left in when Lebron went to Miami and the situation the Heat were left in when he returned to the Cavs were very different.
When Lebron left the Cavs, they were left with a bare cupboard. When Lebron left the Heat, they still had Bosh and D-Wade. There was talk of a Cavs/Heat ECF and it was a tossup as far as who would win.
But Bosh's clotting issues surfaced and derailed that. In short, when Lebron left the Cavs (both times) they were forced to go into rebuild mode. The Heat were still trying to be contenders.
As for the Lakers, they chose to pay Kobe max money even though he was coming off of a blown Achilles. They still had another max slot, but no one was going to play alongside a Kobe that was no longer a guaranteed deep playoff run.
Folks can debate and still do, whether or not they should have given Kobe the money they did, but it was a choice Jeanie made. When Magic was forced to retire early, he didn't get rewarded with a last big contract and she vowed that it wouldn't happen again to a player who stayed with the Lakers for his whole career. So, when the opportunity came up with Kobe, she stuck to it. Personally, I agree with it, but understand why others might not.
why?
Obviously once a player goes to a team, especially publicly, and says they don't want to be there anymore, that's not honoring the deal. They are holding a gun to the teams head and saying if you don't let me go I'll pout and loaf and ruin things. This is true, but what player has not honored his deal? didn't NO choose to sit Davis? Cavs and SA could have held onto Kyrie/Kawhi
Team chose not to see what would happen if they held onto said player.
Not hard to pout and play like shit and keep cashing checks until the team realizes they need to trade you after allExactly. OK...has any player ever done this that really cost his team?Obviously once a player goes to a team, especially publicly, and says they don't want to be there anymore, that's not honoring the deal. Cannot be more of a distraction than Kyrie really......and they made it to the Finals. Yes, before he demanded a trade but it was well known he was unhappy (he didn't talk to anyone for weeks).Sounds good, but we all know what a distraction it becomes.
As far as OKC, that was a mutual decision from whats being reported.
Deal was only in place if Khawi agreed.

Also known as "pulling a Kawhi"Or say you’re injured.
wouldn't that mean the pouting didn't matter? what does it matter what "we" know? The players were aware of it and they still went to the Finals.‘We’ werent aware of it, and it didnt affect his play.
Lots of stuff happens in locker rooms that doesn’t carry over onto the court.
That's the equivalent of asking for a trade?People here don’t understand what a contract is, in the real world.
Break it, and you are subject to sometimes severe penalties.
How would one of the players like it if Nike or some other big sponsor said ‘ fuck it, you aren’t needed anymore. We’re voiding your last 3 years/60M.
Kobe ruined the Lakers, only now are they finally recovering.
Jimmy Butler in Minny. Not hard to pout and play like shit and keep cashing checks until the team realizes they need to trade you after all
No he didn't. Jeanie made a decision to honor his time and accomplishments by giving him one last big contract. His first question was, "Will we still have enough to get a max level guy?" The Lakers said yes, so he accepted the contract. At the time, none of them thought they would strike out in FA both seasons.
Short Buss is the one who ruined the Lakers.
Well, they didn't trade Kyrie until he ALLEGEDLY threatened to have surgery to sandbag the Season.Cannot be more of a distraction than Kyrie really......and they made it to the Finals. Yes, before he demanded a trade but it was well known he was unhappy (he didn't talk to anyone for weeks).
