I have no problem with Molitor because he played a good chunk of games at 3rd/2nd, plus he was also a great baserunner (504 stolen bases with a 79.4% success rate)

He never “got my vote”, but I don’t get my panties in a bunch over his inclusion. Like I said, he played approx 50% of his career in the field. Not my ideal, but OK.

Baines just has no place in the Hall. And Edgar’s bat was not elite enough by half to make it as a 90% DH.

"In the '80s and '90s, almost all of the stats that people trust, he was in the top five -- for 20 years. He drove in 100 runs late in his career and he drove them in early. Game-winning RBIs, he's up there with the best of them. He had a very distinguished career."

That's Tony La Russa of course. I knew that sounded ridiculous so I took a look to see just how ridiculous.

These are the top 5 (AL even, not MLB) finishes that Harold Baines had during his career. If I omitted any "stats that people trust" I apologize.

He led the AL in SLG once. He was 5th in hits once. He was 4th in RBIs once. He was 2nd in triples once. He was 3rd and 4th in sac flies (cracked that one twice!)

Now if Tony was talking about totals over the span of those 20 years I think he worded it incorrectly, but I would also be inclined to point out how much better every player's rankings will look if we limit ourselves to the seasons in which that particular player was active.

89 year old former Astros broadcaster Rene Cardenas has quite a homerish ballot: not only voting for Clemens (but not Bonds) and Wagner, but also voting for Berkman and Oswalt.

This also means that Dale Murphy gets in via the veterans committee.
I would have no prob with Murphy getting in. He is a solid fence resident, and those guys somet8mes get in. Baines, though, was not even in the same neighborhood as the fence. He was about 3 blocks down the street.

With Baines, there are now 3 DHs in the Hall (Thomas, Molitor and Baines). IMHO, only Thomas, of those 3 belongs. For a DH to get in, you need to be in the elite of the elite to get in. Molitor had enough defense in his career to make his argument at least debatable, and Thomas was a BEAST with the bat. Baines has absolutely zero argument. Edgar was a good bat, but even if he were a position player, his argument would only be debatable. He is not nearly elite enough to get in, IMHO.

Molitor had 3,319 hits (9th all-time) and a career average of .306. He may not have played the field much in the waning years of his career, but he still had HOF credentials.

DH accumulators are BS.

So since he is the best of a mediocre lot as far as ERA, he gets in? To me they have been watering down the HoF recently. I'm fine if no one gets elected in a particular year. Its unfair to the real HoFers from the past. We still talk about Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller, Carl Hubbell and Bob Gibson etc to this day but no one will be talking about Roy Halladay as one of the greats in the coming generations.
He pitched most of his career in a lineup loaded al east during the steroid era.

I'm making a push for Dave "Sky King" Kingman....he had 442 homers and a great glove.....

Kong!

Remember when the Yanks had him for about a week? I think he hit about 5 HRs before they flipped him again.

Led the league in SLG as many times as Harold Baines did, plus led the league in HR twice.

Shoo-in.

Extra credit: TLR was his manager at the end of his last season in baseball.
