I think the Harold Baines becoming a HOFer is more to convince EVERYBODY to vote for Omar Vizquel... Now his offensive numbers look HOF eligible too...

Jones was arguably a better fielder (defensive metrics give him a pretty big edge) and was actually a good hitter, even relative to his positional peers. Omar had, what, an 82 OPS+? That's pedestrian even by middle infielder standards. Jones also had an actual peak. Omar was just average for a long time with a few good seasons sprinkled in.

I am AOK with Smith getting in, but yea. Baines getting in is a joke.
Agreed. I remember there was an unwritten standards of lifetime .300 hitter, 500 homeruns and 3,000 hits. At least one of those three gave you a shot and two of those three got you in for sure.

Lee Smith unanimous, George Steinbrenner <5 votes. SMH

I don't see the problem with Steinbrenner though, he was banned from baseball (twice!) and hired someone to spy on a player. Not to mention his other non-baseball issues. He was a bad person.

It's not the hall of good guys. It's a museum of the history of the game. How many owners had as big an impact on the history of the game as George did?

There are multiple HOF'ers who were banned from the game at one time or another. The list of bad people already in is long and impressive.

How is Harold Baines a HOF'ER? He never gor more than 6.1 percent votes from the writers. Reinsdorf, Larussa, and others who coached probably took all the voters out for steaks and drinks. Baines in and no Edgar Martinez? The HOF is getting watered down.

The veterans committee should select Dave Concepcion and Al Oliver at some point.

With Baines, there are now 3 DHs in the Hall (Thomas, Molitor and Baines). IMHO, only Thomas, of those 3 belongs. For a DH to get in, you need to be in the elite of the elite to get in. Molitor had enough defense in his career to make his argument at least debatable, and Thomas was a BEAST with the bat. Baines has absolutely zero argument. Edgar was a good bat, but even if he were a position player, his argument would only be debatable. He is not nearly elite enough to get in, IMHO.
